Salisbury-Rowan PFLAG awards scholarships

SALISBURY —The Salisbury-Rowan chapter of Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) has awarded four $1,000 scholarships for academic year 2013-14.
The awards were given through the Scholarships Advisory Committee, which includes Chairperson Elizabeth Boltz and members Patricia Horner, Michael Clawson, Carol Williams-Swoope, Dr. Mary Frances Edens, Brandon G. Major and Merry Overholser.
The following students are winners of the 2013 scholarships:
• Traci N. Leak, a senior at Salisbury High School, was awarded the Anne Stanback-Charlotte Kinlock Scholarship, named in honor of Salisbury native Anne Stanback and her wife, Charlotte Kinlock. Leak will be attending the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. She is the daughter of Jody and Maggie Blackwell of Salisbury.
• Erin H. Marohn, a senior at Jesse C. Carson High School, was awarded the Linda Ketner Community Service Scholarship, named in honor of Salisbury native Linda Ketner. Marohn will be attending East Carolina University. She is the daughter of Lars and Ruth Marohn of China Grove.
• Emily S. Faust, a senior at East Rowan High School, was awarded the Salisbury Pride-Scotty Ray Gilbert Scholarship, named in memory of Scotty Ray Gilbert, past board member of Salisbury Pride. Faust will be attending Rowan-Cabarrus Community College. She is the daughter of Susan Faust of Salisbury and Randy Faust of Cleveland.
• Zachary T. Hunter, a senior at West Rowan High School, was awarded the Roger and Linda Hull Scholarship. Hunter will be attending Western Carolina University. He is the son of Crystal and Brian Merck of Salisbury and Brent Hunter.
“Uniquely, Salisbury-Rowan PFLAG’s scholarships may be awarded to any public, private or home schooled high school senior continuing his or her education at any accredited trade school, community college or traditional four year college or university,” said Michael Clawson, chapter president, in a press release.
The local chapter has awarded sixteen scholarships over the last six years. This year’s recipients were recognized and honored at the regular monthly meeting of Salisbury-Rowan PFLAG on May 18.
“Salisbury-Rowan PFLAG is proud to support these articulate, accomplished scholars with great promise for future contribution to our society in general and to the cause of rights and recognition for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people in particular,” said Liz Boltz, chairperson of the Scholarships Advisory Committee. “Our sincere thanks go to all of our many benefactors who consider this an important cause and whose generosity makes these scholarships possible.”
