Catawba pitcher Carley Tysinger is the school’s first softball All-American in Division II competition.
Tysinger was named to the Daktronics All-America third team.
The freshman won 25 games, including 10 shutouts. She struck out 324 and had a 1.21 ERA.
Tysinger was in the top 10 nationally in strikeouts and ERA.

Appalachian State beat Western Carolina 15-4 in the Southern Conference tournament on Friday.
Noah Holmes (East Rowan) score twice, and Preston Troutman (East) drove in three runs for the Mountaineers.

Livingstone’s Quanera Hayes won her heat in the 400 meters on Thursday in the Division II Championships being held in Colorado.
Hayes was clocked in 54.38 seconds. Hayes will run in the 400 final today.
Hayes ran 22.91 in the 200 meters on Friday to place second in her heat and advanced to Saturday’s final.

West Rowan rising senior defensive back Najee Tucker (6-2, 195) has given Charlotte’s football program a verbal commitment.
• Veteran assistant Seth Smith, who has spent 17 years in the program under Jack Gasterm Baxter Morris and Danny Akins, will be Albemarle’s new football coach.
Akins resigned to take the Southwestern Randolph job.

Robinson beat Enka 1-0 on Friday to win the Western championship series.

Carson’s Junior Legion team opened with a 9-5 win against Concord. Kris Peacock was the winning pitcher, Caleb Hall pitched three innings in relief. Ryan Bearden had three hits, while Grayson Whicker had two.
• Hunter Shepherd had an extraordinary performance as the West Rowan Junior Legion beat Mocksville 11-4.
Shepherd hit two homers and a double and was the winning pitcher.

Rowan County is home tonight against Mocksville.
Southern Rowan is at Winston-Salem.
Kannapolis plays at Lake Norman against the Mooresville Moors

Gray Stone honored John Latimer and Kendall Taylor as the school’s student-athletes of the year.
Taylor, a senior who competed in indoor and outdoor track, cross country, basketball and soccer, has earned 18 letters in her career. Latimer. a junior, competes in tennis, soccer and basketball.
• Gray Stone edged Albemarle and won the YVC’s Jack Gaster Award for overall athletic excellence.
South Stanly was third, and North Rowan was fourth.
The Knights field a team in every sport except wrestling and football. They won eight conference championships this school year.

Jake Cose (3-3) struck out 13 batters and led the Kannapolis Intimidators to a 7-5 win at Hickory on Friday.
Kannapolis had 13 hits — all singles. Micah Johnson went 4-for-4.

In the eGolf Tour’s Willow Creek Open played in High Point, Frank Adams III shot 75-65-68 — 208. He finished at 8-under, tied for 10th and won $2,525.
