CHARLOTTE (AP) — State health officials have closed a southeast Charlotte abortion clinic after investigators found that workers had improperly administered a drug that terminates pregnancies.
The Charlotte Observer reports that A Preferred Woman’s Health Center has 60 days to appeal the case to the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services and regain its certificate to operate. The suspension of the center’s license involves the drug Methotrexate, which is used to induce abortions.
The department began investigating the center in late April. Documents show a 19-year-old woman came to the clinic for an abortion procedure and was given Methotrexate orally. A month later, documents say she returned to the clinic, still pregnant, and had to undergo a “surgical abortion procedure.”
Officials at the Charlotte clinic weren’t immediately available for comment Tuesday.
