RALEIGH (AP) — Two North Carolina Democratic political strategists who have worked for high-profile candidates were seriously wounded after being stabbed in their Raleigh home, and a suspect has been charged, police said Tuesday.
Raleigh police said Jonathon Wayne Broyhill, 31, is charged with attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflecting serious injury. Broyhill was also wounded and taken to WakeMed.
Broyhill is accused of stabbing Nation Richard Hahn, 27, and his wife, Jameson Kirk Hahn, 29, at their home Monday evening. A wedding announcement in a South Carolina newspaper listed Broyhill as the best man at the couple’s wedding in April 2009.
A spokeswoman at WakeMed in Raleigh said Jameson Kirk was listed in critical condition Tuesday afternoon, while Broyhill is in good condition. Nation Hahn was treated and released.
The families issued a statement that read, in part: “Jamie is a strong and courageous young woman and a bright light to us all. Pray for her.”
Nation Hahn is an online strategist who has helped many politicians and non-profit organizations with direct mail and email campaigns. Some of the groups he has worked with include the Coalition to Protect All N.C. Families, a campaign opposed to the state constitutional amendment that limits marriage to a union between a man and a woman. He has also worked with the N.C. Sierra Club and former U.S. Sen. John Edwards’ presidential campaign.
Jamie Hahn also worked on campaigns for several politicians, including Edwards, former U.S. Rep. Brad Miller and former U.S. Senate candidate Ken Lewis.
Broyhill was identified as a strategist for Jamie Hahn’s firm when he made a campaign contribution to Walter Dalton’s gubernatorial bid last September, according to campaign finance records posted on the State Board of Elections website.
