West Rowan’s Toni Lucente scored her 100th career goal in a 4-0 NPC soccer win against South Rowan Monday.
Lucente opened the scoring and moved ahead of Allison Baucom all-time at West with her 99th goal. She finished off a pass by Kelly Boley.
Lucente converted a penalty kick five minutes later to give the Falcons a 2-0 lead.
Her teammates on the field swarmed her with hugs and high-fives as they realized what had happened. Lucente was briefly pulled from the game, so she could be congratulated by her other teammates and coaches.
South Rowan coach Jamey Basinger recognized South seniors Analleli Delgado, Mayra Albarran and Madison Hite at halftime on Senior Night.
In the second half, Lucente added goal No. 101, as she rocketed a 30-yard free kick past the outstretched arms of Raiders keeper Macy Rucker.
In the 60th minute, West’s Kayla Boley concluded the scoring as she converted the Falcons’ second penalty kick.
South Rowan played with determination, limiting the Falcons to three goals off set pieces and keeping West’s Mariah Coleman off of the score sheet.
“South Rowan worked so hard tonight,” West coach Nick Brown said. “They have a good coach and a great group of kids who laid it all on the line. They made it hard for us to get into a rhythm, so we had to make a few adjustments to try to stretch them out. Though the game was really tough, tonight belonged to Toni. She has just been such a positive fixture on this team and I’m happy she was able to score her 100th goal tonight. I’m proud of everyone for helping her achieve this accomplishment.”
South sophomore Leslie Franks had a strong game in the midfield. She presented Lucente with the gameball that she scored her 100th goal with at the conclusion of the match.
• Salisbury’s soccer team won 4-0 against Lexington on Monday. Kate Grant led the Hornets with a goal and two assists. The other scores were by Susannah Dixon and Adna Music.
Kaytee Leonguerrero had an assist off a punt and had the shutout in goal for Salisbury.
The Hornets’ fourth goal was an own-goal off a Grant corner that occurred two minutes into the match.
The victory came at a steep price as Maritsa Mourouzidis went down early in the second half with an apparent knee injury.
Mourouzidis had the game- winner for the Hornets (10-7, 5-3) against Ledford last Thursday.
“I’m at a loss for words about Maritsa (who tore an ACL two years ago),” Salisbury coach Matt Parrish said. “It’s a tough pill to swallow.”

Prep baseball

Concord High will honor coach Bill Ford in ceremonies prior to Friday’s baseball game with A.L. Brown and the Spiders’ facility officially will be named the Bill Ford Baseball Complex.
Ford, 86, is a 1958 graduate of Catawba.
A Cabarrus County Hall of Famer, he played minor league baseball from 1947-58, except for a stint in the service. In 1949, he batted .380 with 27 doubles and 14 triples as a 22-year-old prospect at Ogden, Utah. He hit 56 homers with the High Point-Thomasville Hi-Toms in his last three minor league seasons.
Ford served as a teacher, coach and AD at Concord 29 years (1960-89) and was head baseball coach 22 years.
He is remembered as the coach of the 1961 Kannapolis American Legion team that won the state championship.
• South Rowan beat Central Cabarrus 7-5 in non-conference action on Monday.
Dylan Goodman had a two-run double and Eric Tyler and Tyler Fuller had two-run singles for the Raiders (14-7).
Nathan Lambert (2-1) pitched five strong innings for the win. Blake Sechler pitched the sixth, and Billy Winecoff finished for his third save.
South ended a four-game slide.

• West Davidson lost 7-5 to Wheatmore on Monday.
Matt Berrier took the loss.

Justin Norman, Justin Smith and Graham Shoaf had two hits each for the Green Dragons.

Prep softball

Salisbury pitcher Caroline Forbis threw her third no-hitter of the season Monday against Lexington.
The freshman also went 3-for-3 at the plate with a single, double and a grand slam.
• Carson won 4-3 at West Iredell in NPC action on Monday. Lacee Hunsucker struck out five and was the winning pitcher. Hunsucker had two hits and knocked in three runs for the Cougars. Sidney Grkman had two hits, including a double, and drove in a run.
Morgan Peninger, Kayla Sigmon and Rachel Freeze also had hits for the Cougars.
• South Rowan left the bases loaded three times but still won 7-3 against A.L. Brown and still hasn’t lost outside the NPC. South is 10-8 overall but 3-8 in league play.
Katherine Starnes had two triples for the Raiders. Caitlin Waters had an RBI triple. Abby Fields had two hits. Caroline Hubbard and Kiala Dyer drove in runs.
Sammy Kennerly pitched three innings.
Logan Lowery pitched the last four and struck out nine. Lowery also doubled.

Prep tennis

East Rowan defeated West Iredell 6-3 Monday to finish a perfect NPC season.
Chance Brown, Jeremy Price, Evan Rogers and Cameron Thomas won in singles for the Mustangs. Ike Emerson-Thomas and Brown-Price took doubles matches for East (11-3, 11-0).

Prep track

The NPC track meet will be held today at East Rowan, with the field events and 4×800 relay getting things started at 1:30.

College golf

UNC Greensboro’s Roy Dixon (Salisbury) shot 78 on Monday in the second day of the Southern Conference Championships at Daniel Island, S.C.
Dixon is at 158 and is tied for 38th.

College baseball

Catawba pitcher John J. Tuttle (A.L. Brown) and center fielder Blake Houston (South Rowan) were named to the SAC all-tournament team. Houston batted .500. Tuttle had a strong start against Wingate.
Nathan Fulbright (East Rowan) finished his freshman season as Guilford’s leading hitter.
He batted .414 with 21 RBIs and had an on-base percentage of .500.

College softball

Catawba pitcher Carley Tysinger and center fielder Amanda Terry were named to the SAC all-tournament team.
Tysinger was 3-1 with 42 strikeouts. Terry batted .353.
Lenoir-Rhyne first baseman Jessica Fellmeth was named tournament MVP.
• Pfeiffer pitcher Samantha Jarmusch was named to the Conference Carolinas all-tournament team.

College lacrosse

Catawba’s Chelsey Bauer, Meredith Jones, Ebony Mills, Jillian O’Connor and Bethany Davis were second team picks on the the All-Independent women’s lacrosse team.s

Local golf

The Ladies Golf Association of Salisbury played a low net tournament recently. Jayne Hubbard won, with Jo Shaw second, and Beverly Cobb third.
The next event will be at 9 a.m. on Thursday, May 2.

Rowan runners

Robert Miller won the fifth Annual Tom Cowden 5k on Sunday at Sloan Park.
Miller finished in a time of 17:10 and was followed by Alex Freeze in 18:51 and Bobby Aswell in 19:14.
The top female was Melissa Orr in 21:16. Josie Hegler was second in 22:14, and Meredith Abramson was third in 22:19.

Stallions baseball

The Greater Cabarrus Stallions Homeschool team defeated Gray Stone 10-1 Monday.
Caleb Threadgill had three hits and Dalton Lankford, Noah Jarrett and Hunter Shepherd had two hits apiece.
Jarrett was the winning pitcher with eight strikeouts.
