The Rowan County Chapter of the NAACP and Livingstone College’s Student Government Association is jointly sponsoring a voter registration Sunday event, Voter Rights Sunday, on the campus. The event will take place at 3 p.m. at the Harriet Tubman building. The guest speaker will be the North Carolina NAACP community organizer, the Rev. Curtis Gatewood, a Livingstone College alumnus. He will speak about the importance of unity and justice.
“We are honored to collaborate with the college students because they’ve always been at the forefront of the Civil Rights struggle and in order to improve the quality of life for all citizens, we need the support of the young people and the faith community,” said Rowan NAACP President Scott Teamer.
Teamer and other NAACP representatives are scheduled to speak at area churches throughout April and May in an effort to educate the community. Teamer said it is also “a call for action for citizens to register to vote, now more than ever.”
The NAACP organization plans to do what it takes to encourage people to vote, he said.
