Keith Henry has been named as Catawba’s defensive coordinator and linebackers coach.
A Catawba All-American in the 1980s, he has been an assistant football coach at Wake Forest the past 11 seasons. He’s coached outside linebackers, defensive ends and defensive backs and was special teams coordinator in 2011.
Henry coached at Ohio University six seasons before joining the Wake Forest staff. He’s also coached at North Carolina A&T, Charleston Southern and Gardner-Webb.
In his playing career at Catawba as a free safety, Henry had 398 tackles and 20 interceptions. He’s still tied for the school record interceptions record. He was a first-team All-America pick in 1988, a second-team pick in 1987 and Honorable Mention in 1986.
Henry is remembered for one of the best-known plays in Catawba history, his blocked punt for a safety that provided the only points in a 2-0 win against Carson-Newman in 1987.
A four-time All-SAC player, Henry was elected to the Catawba Sports Hall of Fame in 2000 and entered the SAC Hall of Fame in 2001.

Catawba’s annual Blue-White spring football game wil be held on Saturday, April 6. Kickoff is at 11 a.m.

Catawba Golf Classic

The 19th annual Catawba Football Golf Classic will be held on Friday, May 10, at 10 a.m. at Warrior.
The event is a major fundraiser for Catawba football.

College baseball

Catawba’s baseball team hosts Lincoln Memorial in a big SAC series on Friday and Saturday.
Catawba (27-11) is in second place in the SAC, two games behind Wingate.
Catawba, ranked 30th, travels to Mars Hill for its final conference series of the regular season on April 12-13.
• UNC Greensboro’s Caleb Henley (East Rowan) pitched a scoreless inning in a 17-8 win againt North Carolina Central. He struck out three of the four men he faced.

Minor leagues

Pitchers Rudy Brown (South Rowan) and Keegan Linza (North Rowan) were recently released by MLB organizations.
• Brown, 24, pitched three seasons in the Kansas City Royals organization after signing as a free agent.
Brown pitched in 59 games, mostly in relief, and had a record of 6-4. His ERA was 3.25. He struck out 127 and walked 29.
Brown played in full-season A ball last season.
• Linza, 24, hurled two seasons in the Chicago White Sox organization. He pitched in 40 games, including 16 starts. He had a 5-5 record with a 4.79 ERA. He struck out 57 and walked six.
Linza was a 38th-round pick out of Liberty in 2011.
• Outfielder Wade Moore (West Rowan, Catawba) was recently released by the Washington Nationals.
A 19th-round pick out of Catawba in 2010, Moore played three minor league seasons.
He reached advanced A ball in 2012 before leaving baseball to give football a shot at Catawba last fall.
In 189 minor league games, Moore, 25, batted .234 with an on-base percentage of .345. He had 27 doubles, seven triples, eight homers and 35 stolen bases.
• The Kannapolis Intimidators released their 2013 roster.
It includes three of the White Sox top 30 prospects — (No. 23) Brandon Brennan, a right-handed picher; (No. 25) second baseman Micah Johnson, and (No. 30) southpaw Jefferson Olacio.
