Guilford freshman catcher Nathan Fulbright (East Rowan) is having an outstanding season.
In Saturday’s 6-5 win against Hampden-Sydney, Fulbright had three RBIs. He had a two-run single in the first inning and an RBI single in the ninth that tied the game at 5-5.
Fulbright has 10 RBIs in just 31 official at-bats. He’s batting .419 (13-for-31) and his on-base percentage is .514.
• Noah Holmes (East) drove in the winning run with a ninth-inning double as Appalachian State beat Wofford 7-6 on Sunday.
Holmes went 2-for-4 to raise his batting average to .323.

Prep basketball

Scott Brewer’s tenure as boys basketball coach at Concord has ended suddenly.
Brewer took Concord to four regionals in six seasons and had a record of 160-21.
Brewer coached Central Cabarrus to the 3A state title in 2000.
• Cox Mill named Jody Barbee as its new boys basketball coach. Barbee was jayvee boys coach this season.
Brad Hinson, who got the Cox Mill program started, took the AD post at Union Academy.
Starting this fall, Cox Mill will be part of a nine-team 3A league with East Rowan, West Rowan, South Rowan, Carson, Concord, Northwest Cabarrus, Central Cabarrus and Hickory Ridge.

Prep football

Former A.L. Brown standout Blair Hardin is on the move.
Hardin, 30, who made Porter Ridge a state power in 4A in recent seasons, was named as Morganton Freedom’s new coach.
Hardin was 13-2, 14-1 and 13-2 in his last three seasons at Porter Ridge.
Mike Helms, who had coached previously at Northwest Cabarrus, resigned as Freedom’s coach a month ago.

Local racing

The local NCQMA Speedway on Peach Orchard Road (exit 72) is offering a chance for young drivers (ages 5-16) to try quarter midget racing on Saturday, April 6.
From 11 until 4, a child can drive 10 laps for $15.
A car and mandatory safety equipment will be provided. Track officials and a track flagman will be on hand.
A parent or legal guardian must be present to sign a waiver. Drivers should wear pants and tennis shoes.

Local golf

The McCanless Couples played with a Captain’s Choice format on Sunday.
The winning team was Tommy Reynolds, Ricky Honeycutt and David Huneycutt.
The team of Gene and Mary Seaford and Walt and Kim Kincaid finished second.
Reynolds won longest putt. Gene Seaford won closest to the pin.

Intimidators baseball

The Kannapolis Intimidators open April 4 in Lakewood, N.J. The home opener is April 11 against Hickory.

Legion baseball

Rowan County is scheduled to begin the season on May 18 at Newman Park against the Mooresville Legends.

Davie used a six-run sixth inning to beat DeMatha (Md.) 9-2 on Saturday in a game played in Welcome.
• North Rowan (5-6, 3-5) plays at North Moore Tuesday in a YVC contest.
Offensive leaders for North have been Clint Veal (.407) and Chance Mazza (.379).
Jake Pritchard leads in RBIs with seven. The Cavaliers haven’t homered yet.
Pitching records are Cory Fries (2-0), Brandon White (1-1), Veal (1-2) and Travis Holshouser (1-3).
North’s team ERA is under 2.00.

Halls of Fame

Pfeiffer’s Hall of Fame will induct former North Stanly star and Pfeiffer coach Jack Ingram and the late Kermit Young, for whom the South Stanly football field is named. Young was a notable organizer and administrator in Stanly athletics for decades.
• Lexington High has announced that it will start a Hall of Fame. The first class will be inducted Sept. 26.
