PELETIER(AP) — Officials say a wildfire in the Croatan National Forest has been contained.
Dennis Register with N.C. Forestry says the fire has burned nearly 700 acres near Pettiford Creek in Peletier since it was spotted Friday. Officials are calling it the “woodpecker wildfire” because it’s close to the long leaf pine trees where the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker lives.
High humidity and rain are expected to help. The fire is expected to burn itself out within a few days.
Officials say crews were in the middle of a prescribed burn when their helicopter spotted the wildfire at a different location from the burn.
