Commissioners will talk de-anexation today

SALISBURY — The Rowan County Board of Commissioners will revisit possible de-annexation of the Rowan County Airport at its meeting this afternoon.
Chairman Jim Sides requested the reconsideration since all five commissioners are expected to be in attendance. Commissioners voted 3-1 at their last meeting to ask lawmakers for a bill that would de-annex the airport.
The reconsideration brings back to the table the heated topic that has pitted the city and county against each other.
City officials have offered to lower taxes as a part of an agreement to keep the airport property, but Sides has stated publicly he “didn’t feel comfortable” with the terms.
Sides, along with commissioners Craig Pierce and Mike Caskey, voted to pursue legislation. Commissioner Jon Barber voted against.
Chad Mitchell, the fifth commissioner, was absent due to a Washington, D.C., trip.
