Stories for kids, contest and retreat coming up

SALISBURY — The Literary Bookpost will have Kids’ Ink: Saturday Morning Story Time every Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Kids’ Reading Room with local authors, readers and storytellers reading new and classic illustrated stories. Kids’ Ink is open for all ages.
The schedule for March is: story time on March 9 and 16 at 11; March 23, Rowan Reads Kids’ Club; March 30, Easter egg hunt and story time.

Jan McCanless received the Mother Vine short story award from 2013 awarded by Barnhills Books in Winston Salem for her book “Wyatt Earp, GAP Pickles, and Thoughts of Home.” It is a compilation of her Salisbury Post and Senior Savvy columns, as well as her humorous articles for other publications nationwide.
The Writers’ Workshop of Asheville is sponsoring its 24th Annual Poetry Contest, open to any writer in the U.S. The guidelines are posted on the website, www.twwoa.org. For questions, email writersw@gmail.com, or call 828-254-8111.
Entries must be postmarked by March 30. All work must be unpublished. Each poem should not exceed two pages. Multiple entries are accepted. Your name, address, phone, email and title of work should also appear on a separate cover sheet. The entry fee is $25 for every three poems. All entries receive comments from the judges.
Enclose self-sealing, self-addressed stamped envelope for comments and winners’ list, and mail to: Poetry Contest, 387 Beaucatcher Road, Asheville, NC 28805. Emailed submissions may be sent to writersw@gmail.com with “Poetry Contest” in the subject. The entry fee is payable online at www.twwoa.org.
Awards: First place — winner’s choice of a three-night stay at The Mountain Muse B&B in Asheville; or three free online workshops; or 100 pages line-edited and revised by our editorial staff; second place — two-night stay at the B&B; or two free workshops; or 50 pages line-edited; third place — one free workshop, or 25 pages line-edited.
The Writers’ Workshop is holding its Annual Writers’ Retreat May 16-19 at Folly Beach, S.C., — an ideal place to relax, write and review each other’s work.
Beginning or experienced writers of fiction, plays, non-fiction or memoirs are welcome. The all-inclusive rate (except for meals) is $495 for a private room, or $450 shared. The commuter rate is $55 per day.
