North Rowan’s wrestlers hit the mat for the first time in the state tournament in Greensboro on Friday.
Six Cavaliers won quarterfinal matches. Simon Connolly (106 pounds), Marc Gonzalez (113), Damon Ellis (120), Brandon Lemmon (145), Brandon Rabon (170) and Will Robertson (285) claimed victories.
Gonzalez also won his semifinal match, taking a 4-1 decision gainst Rosewood’s Angel Jaramillo.
Ellis won his semifinal match by pinning Monroe’s Raquan Neal.
Robertson pined North Wilkes’ Dakota Bell in the semis.
Connolly dropped a 5-0 semifinal decision to East Surry’s Eddie Nunez.
Lemmon was decisioned 8-2 by West Wilkes’ Jorge Lima in the semifinals.
Rabon was decisioned 5-3 by West Wilkes’ Hayden Sutphin in the semifinals.
• In 3A, East Rowan’s Wyatt Blume won by pin in his quarterfinal match against West Henderson’s Jeff Futch.
Blume then lost a 6-0 decision in his semifinal match against Rocky Mount’s Alexander Knight.
A.L. Brown’s Nicholas Sexton won at 113 in the quarterfinals with a 5-1 decision against St. Stephens’ Dakota Griffith.
Sexton lost in the semifinals to Central Cabarrus’ Heath Gleaton.
East’s Jason Deutsch won a a 2-0 decision in the quarterfinals at 113 against North Gaston’s Ian Machamer.
Deutsch then decisioned North Iredell’s Matthew Tutterow 2-0 in a semifinal match.
Carson’s Alex Lyles (220) won an 8-5 decision in the quarterfinals over West Henderson’s Daniel Carroll.
Lyles pinned Conley’s Sterling Mills in the semifinals.
Losing decisions in Friday’s quarterfinals were East’s Logan Haas (106), South’s Rowan’s Logan Durham (106), West Rowan’s Walt Waggoner (145) and Carson’s Brandon Sloop (160).
Durham and Sloop started comebacks in Friday’s consolation matches.
In 4A quarterfinals, Davie’s Alex Gobble decisioned Alexander Central’s Dustin Jones 11-7 at 182. Davie’s Ryan Smith lost a quarterfinal match at 126.
Gobble lost in the semis.

• In 2A, Salisbury’s Jeffrey Burton lost in Thursday’s first round but started working his way back with a quick pin and a major decision on Friday.

Prep baseball

Carson coach Chris Cauble knew he had good pitching, and the Cougars proved it in a 7-0 win against Robinson on Friday in China Grove.
Hurlers Colton Laws, Blake Cauble and T.J. Brackett combined for zero walks.
Cauble got the win.

Dylan Carpenter and Heath Mitchem had two hits apiece to lead the Cougars’ offense. Carpenter had a triple.
Carson pounded out six hits and scored five runs in the second inning to take control.
The Cougars (2-0) will play today at Northwest Cabarrus. The jayvee game begins at 1 p.m., with the varsity game to follow.
West 4, Mooresville 3

West Rowan stayed unbeaten with a win on Friday against the Blue Devils.
Justin Evans pitched six innings for the win, and Nick Collins earned a save.
Evans, Michael Pinkston and Bubba McLaughlin had two hits each. Harrison Baucom doubles. Taylor Garczynski drove in two runs.
South 4, NW Cabarrus 2

South (2-0) only got three hits, but the Raiders drew seven walks and scratched out a win at home.
Jonnie Lefebvre squeezed home a run, and Aaron Bare had a two-run single. South got another run on a wild pitch.
Bare also did the job on the mound, throwing five strong innings. Billy Winecoff worked the sixth and seventh innings and picked up his second save in two days.
Northwest’s two runs came when the Trojans strung together consecutive hits by Tyler Noyes, Tanner Bigham and Jordan Goodman.
“Our pitchers did a good job against a really tough lineup that is going to score a lot of runs,” South coach Thad Chrismon said. “Offensively, we were able to do just enough.”
N. Moore 5, North Rowan 3

The Cavaliers (0-1) left eight men on base in Thursday’s YVC game.
North got solid pitching from Clint Veal, who took the loss, and from Travis Holshouser, who hurled the final two innings. Only one of the five runs Veal allowed was earned.
At the plate, Veal produced two of North’s six hits.
Other scores

East Rowan lost 6-3 to North Davidson, while Salisbury won 4-2 at A.L. Brown.

Prep soccer

West Rowan’s soccer team won 4-0 against Salisbury on Friday in an early battle of strong teams.
Mariah Coleman had two assists and scored a goal. Toni Lucente scored two goals. Victoria Patterson scored her first high school goal.
Claudia Patterson and Rebecca Parker keyed West’s defense. Patterson marked Salisbury standout Kristel Rodriguez.
Coleman scored off a Lucente pass to open the scoring, and Patterson’s goal made it 2-0 at halftime.
Kristen Harman, Kate Grant, Kayla Honeycutt and Kathryn Rusher were standouts for the Hornets.
On Monday, Salisbury is home against Concord. West travels to Northwest Cabarrus for a 4:30 p.m. game.

Prep softball

In South Rowan’s 14-0 win against Cox Mill on Thursday, Logan Lowery had three hits, including a triple. Caroline Hubbard had two hits.
Lowery pitched a three-hitter in the five-inning game and struck out 10.

Catawba baseball

Catawba’s baseball team bounced back from a rough weekend at Newberry and beat Anderson 10-3 on Friday in the opener of a SAC series.
Garrett Furr drove in four runs to power the Indians (11-4, 3-4) .
Furr and Craig Brooks walloped two-run homers. Julio Zubillaga (Carson) had two hits. Nick Lomascolo got the win. He fanned 11 and improved his record to 4-1.

Catawba hoops

Catawba’s teams play at Lincoln Memorial tonight, with games set for 6 and 8. Both Catawba teams will be in next week’s SAC tournament.

CIAA women’s hoops

In Friday’s semifinals, Shaw beat Elizabeth City State 76-61 and Fayetteville State topped Virginia Union 71-57.
Shaw and Fayetteville State will play at 5 p.m. for the championship tonight.
DaQuondra Cuthbertson (North Rowan) scored two points for Fayetteville State. De’Rya Wylie (Salisbury) scored four for Elizabeth City State.

Pfeiffer hoops

Pfeiffer’s men’s basketball team ended the season with an 80-62 loss to Queens in Merner Gym on Friday.
Pfeiffer finished 4-23 and 2-18 in Conference Carolinas play.
Josh Humphrey scored 20 points and pulled down 11 rebounds for the Falcons.
• Pfeiffer’s women’s team beat Queens 86-65 on Friday.
Brittany Cox, Kellie Rhoney and Jodie Lemons scored 19 points each for the Falcons (22-5, 17-5), and Christina Harvey had 18.
Pfeiffer will be the No. 3 seed for the league tournament and will host No. 6 Queens again on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

7th-grade boys hoops

Southeast won 51-36 against Corriher-Lipe.
Cameron Prugh led the Patriots with 15 points.
Elijah Moss scored 10 points, while Jailen Williams and Jamarius Hairston scored six apiece.
The Patriots (12-0) have a big game against Knox on Monday.

Booster club meetings

The next North Rowan High School Booster Club meeting is Monday, March 4, at 6 p.m. in the auditorium. Discussion topics will include the annual golf tournament, cheerleading uniforms, the paver project, the Snyder scholarship and the barbecue chicken fundraiser.
The public is invited and encouraged to attend.
• The Salisbury High School athletic boosters will meet on Monday, March 4, at 7 p.m. in classroom 105.
The boosters are seeking officers and committee members for the 2013-14 school year.
