Bessemer City was the home team, but it got run out of its own gym by North Rowan’s girls 86-46 on Monday 86-46 in a 1A first-round playoff game.
Brian Lytton’s Cavaliers (13-11) used a pressure defense that sent them to a 36-7 lead after the first quarter.
“Just pressure and layups,” Lytton said. “We also hit five 3-pointers.”
In that first eight minutes, Demeria Robinson and Taylor Sells each had two from downtown and Special Washington added another.
Washington led North with 22 points and was one of five Cavaliers in double figures. Amber Carter scored 14, followed by Robinson with 13, Aliyah Farmer with 12 and Sells with 11.
“We just jumped on them early and never let up,” Lytton said.
No. 10 seed North now goes to YVC champion South Davidson in Wednesday’s second round. Second-seeded South Davidson thumped South Stokes 60-43.

Davie boys win

Davie County’s boys blew out to a 19-point lead in the fourth quarter and defeated East Forsyth 66-59 in a first-round 4A playoff game on Monday night in Mocksville.
The game was not as close as the final score indicates because East Forsyth outscored the Davie subs 12-0 to finish the game.
Davie (21-5) led by one at halftime but had a big third quarter. Twins Cody and Caleb Martin each scored nine in the quarter. Caleb led the War Eagles with 15, while Cody added 14. Kenyon Tatum (10 points) and Peyton Sell (8) kept the pressure on the Eagles in the fourth.
Davie (21-5) travels to No. 3 seed Independence (23-5) on Wednesday. Independence edged CPC fourth-place team R.J. Reynolds 75-74 on Monday.

A.L. Brown falls

A.L. Brown’s boys jumped out to a 23-12 lead after a quarter, but then turnovers did in the 11th-seeded Wonders.
They fell 82-75 at No. 6 North Forsyth on Monday in a first-round 3A playoff game.
“We had some unforced turnovers and they tied it at halftime,” said Wonders coach Shelwyn Klutz. “They were 31-of-37 from the free throw line, so you know how I’m feeling. They hit more than we shot.”
A.L. Brown finished 19-8. North Forsyth (21-6) scored 38 points off Wonder turnovers.
“It was a tough environment,” Klutz said.
One bright spot was senior Derrick Copeland’s night. He was 10-for-19 from the field and hit six 3s, scoring a game-high 30 points. It put him over the 1,000-point mark for his career.
Tydus Parks was 9-for-13 from the field and grabbed 10 rebounds to go with his 22 points.

The NCHSAA individual wrestling championships are set for Thursday through Saturday at the Greensboro Coliseum.

Women’s basketball

Catawba senior Taylor May (South Rowan) was honored as SAC Player of the Week for women’s basketball.
May averaged 17.5 points in wins against Mars Hill and Newberry. She shot 68 percent for the week.
May averages 9.9 points and 5.7 rebounds.
• Livingstone plays in the CIAA tournament today against Virginia State in the 1 p.m. game at Charlotte’s TWC Arena.
•Shi-Heria Shipp (Salisbury) scored 12 points for George Washington in Sunday’s 57-52 win against St. Bonvaventure.
• Jessica Heilig (Salisbury) had 11 points and five rebounds in Gardner-Webb’s 55-40 loss to Liberty on Saturday.
• De’Rya Wylie (Salisbury) had 10 points and five rebounds as Elizabeth City State (23-3) beat Bowie State 65-51 on Saturday.
• Charlotte’s Ayanna Holmes (Salisbury) had four points and three assists in Sunday’s 73-56 win against La Salle. Charlotte is 22-4.

College track and field

Western Carolina’s Alisha Bradshaw (Salisbury) won the shot put (46 feet, 101/4 inches) and weight throw (57-71/2) in the Southern Conference Championships.
Bradshaw helped the Western women finish first and was named the outstanding performer for field events.
• Lees-McRae’s Evan Webb (East) broke the school record again on Sunday with a winning effort of 16-63/4 in the Last Chance Meet held at George Mason.
Webb has won four of the five meets he’s entered and is tied for sixth nationally. He’s expected to be an entry in the D-II National Indoor Championships on March 8 in Birmingham, Ala.
• Western Carolina’s Keith Leonard (East Rowan) was 10th in the pole vault (14-63/4) in the SoCon Championships.

College basketball

Kaleb Kimber (West Rowan) scored a career-best 19 points to lead Rio Grande to a 78-70 win against Virginia-Wise on Saturday. Kimber, a senior, was honored prior to the game.
• Carson-Newman’s Ish Sanders was named SAC Player of the Week for men’s basketball. He’s scored 25 or more points four straight games. Catawba hosts Carson-Newman on Wednesday night.

College softball

Catawba beat Lowell (Mass.) 5-1 on Monday for its sixth straight win. Selena Ashley was the winning pitcher.
Emily D. Huneycutt homered, and Holli Chandler had a two-run single.

College baseball

Army’s Jon Crucitti (West Rowan) was 2-for-3 in Army’s 8-6 loss to Eastern Kentucky on Saturday.
• Carson Herndon (Davie) was the starting pitcher as Liberty opened a new stadium. Herndon didn’t get the win but he pitched into the sixth inning and limited Penn State to one run. He struck out three and walked three.
• Gardner-Webb’s Alex Newman (Davie) had two hits and scored the winning run in a 3-2, 11-inning win against Morehead State.
• Pfeiffer vs. Tusculum at Ferebee Field has been postponed from today to Wednesday at 2 p.m.

Louisburg rolling

Louisburg, coached by Mark Vanderslice (West Rowan) is on the brink of winning 30 games for the third straight season. The Hurricanes (27-1) are ranked No. 1 among Division II junior colleges.
The Hurricanes are poised to make their fourth straight trip to the national playoffs.
UNC Asheville’s Jeremy Atkinson was coached by Vanderslice at Louisburg. He scored 28 points against N.C. State this season and 31 against St. John’s.
Two of Vanderslice’s current players have signed with East Carolina coach Jeff Lebo.

7th-grade girls hoops

Southeast won 37-31 against North Rowan Middle in a matchup of unbeaten teams.
Olivia Gabriel scored 18 for the Patriots, and Maren Shumaker and Shaleah Jolly scored seven apiece.

Registration at the East Rowan YMCA for middle school girls volleyball ends on March 2. The league is open for girls in grades 6-8.

Winning Flight 1 was the team of Keith Dorsett, Kevin Lentz, Alan Barefoot and Bryan Moore at 134.
Winning Flight 2 was the team of Brian Jones, Dale Plummer, Rick Ridenhour and John Struzick at 148.
Winning Flight 3 was the team of Cole Thomas, Ronnie Thompson, Doug Thomas and Derek Overcash at 163.
Skins winners were Dorsett (2), Plummer, Andy Lombard, Terry Julian, Barefoot and Larry Boyer.

College football

Appalachian State wil play 12 games next football season, including trips to Montana and Georgia.
Appalachian will host six games at Kidd Brewer Stadium, including non-conference tilts versus North Carolina A&T (Sept. 7) and Charleston Southern (Sept. 28) and Southern Conference contests versus Samford (Oct. 12), Georgia Southern (Oct. 26), Chattanooga (Nov. 2) and Western Carolina (Nov. 23).
