Tyrece Little grabbed the last of his 11 rebounds on a missed Mars Hill 3-pointer just before the horn, and Catawba’s men’s basketball team escaped with an 88-87 SAC victory on Wednesday night.
Mars Hills (3-20, 0-15) is still searching for its first league win, so the Indians barely avoided an ugly road loss.
Catawba went with a three-guard lineup with Lee Martin out and shot well (53.7 percent).
Little scored 24 points.

Freshman Vismantas Marijosius (North Hills) had a career game with 18 points and 17 rebounds. Freshman Nick Houston (Carson) got a start and produced. He hit four 3s and scored 16 points.
Elon Edwards scored 16.

Chris Watson’s layup gave Catawba an 88-83 lead, and the Indians were able to hang on in the frantic final minute.
The Indians enjoyed a 43-28 edge on the glass.
James Fields paced the Lions with 23 points.
Catawba (8-15, 5-10) moved past Tusuclum into seventh place and plays at home against Newberry on Saturday.

Catawba women

Catawba’s women’s basketball team, ranked 10th in the Southeast Region, crushed Mars Hill 78-44 on Wednesday for a SAC road win.
Catawba (14-9, 10-5) stayed tied for third in the SAC. The Indians shot 50.9 percent from the field and went 17-for-20 at the foul line.
Catawba enjoyed a huge 26-13 edge in the turnover department against the Lions (5-18, 2-13).
Senior Taylor May (South Rowan) scored 17 for the Indians, shooting 6-for-9 from the field and 4-for-4 from the foul line. She hit one of Catawba’s three 3-pointers.
Chloe Bully scored 13 points, and Antionette McPhail had 12 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
Elizabeth Merritt and Quaneasia Coleman added eight points each.
Cadence Wilmoth led the Lions with 11 points.

Livingstone women

Livingstone’s women’s basketball team beat St. Augustine’s 84-64 on Wednesday at Trent Gym for a CIAA Southern Division win.
Livingstone trailed by six points at the break but put up 58 points in the second half to pull away.
The Blue Bears (8-16, 4-11) were paced by 20 points and 10 rebounds by Tyesha Tharpe.
Jasmine Murray had 17 points and eight boards, and Tiffany Evans contributed 13 points. Kelcyn Manurs stuffed the stat sheet for eight points, eight rebounds and six assists.
Scoring 11 points each for the Falcons (11-13, 7-8) were Porscha Walton, Autumn Smith-Faulkner and Ebony Spencer.

Steve Robinson made a hole-in-one at the Country Club of Salisbury. Robinson aced the 130-yard No. 9 hole with a 7-iron.

Prep basketball

Robert Hairston has resigned as Lexington boys basketball coach.
Hairston was 99-90 in seven seasons and his teams won CCC championships in 2010 and 2012.
Hairston was a key assistant to West Rowan coach Mike Gurley during some of the Falcons’ finest seasons.

7th-grade girls hoops

North Rowan defeated China Grove 45-25. Egypt Alexander scored 29 points for the Mavericks. Meliya Parker had nine.
Anne Marie Turney led the Red Devils with 16 points.

7th-grade boys hoops

In North Rowan Middle’s 49-11 win against China Grove, Jayden Jones scored 17 points and Dajaun Clement had 11.

College baseball

Freshman Nathan Fulbright (East Rowan) got his first start behind the plate for Guilford and had three hits and two RBIs in a 12-11 loss to Maine-Presque Isle.

Men’s basketball

Livingstone is ranked sixth in the Atlantic Regional rankings. Winston-Salem State is second. J.C. Smith is ninth.
In the Southeast Regional, Lincoln Memorial is ranked second, Wingate is fifth, and Anderson is 10th.
UNC Pembroke is sixth, and Belmont Abbey is seventh.
• Pfeiffer broke a 12-game losing skid on Wednesday with a 64-62 win over Coker in Hartsville, S.C.
Josh Humphrey hit a baseline jumper with under a second left to win it.
Humphrey scored 31 points on 12-for-17 shooting to lead the Falcons (4-21, 2-16).

Women’s basketball

Pfeiffer’s Brittany Cox was named a Division II Academic All-American. Cox averages 18.7 points while carrying a 3.96 GPA.
• Coker upset Pfeiffer’s women 68-66 on Wednesday.
Priscilla Fentry hit a decisive 3-pointer for the Cobras.
Jodie Lemons scored 19 for Pfeiffer. Christina Harvey had 18 points and 11 rebounds.

College golf

Catawba’s women’s golf team finished sixth in the BSC Ann Rhoads Invitational in Birmingham, Ala.
Leslie Long shot 80-83 — 163 to lead the Indians. Madison Kennedy (Salisbury) shot 93-80 — 173. Carmen Grubb (Davie) shot 92-90 — 182.

College lacrosse

Catawba’s women’s lacrosse team lost 21-9 to Belmont Abbey on Wednesday at Shuford. Juliana Conte scored three goals for the Indians (0-3).
• John Scheich scored five goals to lead Catawba’s men’s lacrosse team to a 14-10 win against Mount Olive on Wednesday.

College softball

Catawba freshman pitcher Carley Tysinger continued her amazing season in a 2-0 win against Barton on Wednesday.
Tysinger came within one strike of hurling the school’s first perfect game. She allowed one hit and one walk.
Amanda Terry had a two-run single for the Indians.
Morgan Brann and Tara Gibbs hit back-to-back homers in Catawba’s 4-3 win against Barton in the nightcap.
