Catawba’s men’s basketball team got a career game from freshman Reggie Perkins, who scored 27 points, and won 71-63 at Brevard on Wednesday.
Perkins shot 9-for-10 from the floor and 7-for-8 at the foul line in the SAC contest.
Lee Martin produced 15 points and nine boards for the seventh-place Indians (7-12, 4-7), while Tyrece Little had 14 points and 15 boards.
Catawba shot 56 percent in the second half and dominated the backboards.
Leading Brevard (2-17, 1-10) with 17 points was Manzey Miller.

Catawba women fall

Catawba’s women’s basketball team lost 73-53 at Brevard on Wednesday.
The Indians (10-9, 6-5) shot 38 percent in the SAC contest, while the Tornados were shooting a sizzling 52 percent.
Michaela Watkins scored 29 points on 10-for-16 shooting to lead the Tornados (5-14, 3-8).
Senior Taylor May (South Rowan) played well for Catawba, leading the Indians with 14 points and nine rebounds.
Chloe Bully scored 13 points, while Elizabeth Merritt had eight.
Brevard took charge with a 23-7 run early.
Catawba is at home against Anderson on Saturday.

Catawba football

Catawba head football coach Curtis Walker announced a recruit and coaching staff showcase to introduce his new staff and talk about recruiting for the 2013 season. The event will take place on Friday, Feb. 15, at 5:30 p.m. in the Hayes Fieldhouse meeting room and is open to all fans and friends of Catawba.
Walker and the staff will talk about their new signings for 2013 and show video highlights. Those attending also can venture to Newman Park to watch Catawba’s baseball team battle Wingate in a SAC opener that starts at 6 p.m.

College track and field

Charlotte’s Jake Deaton (Mooresville) was named Atlantic 10 Indoor Track and Field performer of the week. Deaton set a school shot put record.
•Lees-McRae junior Evan Webb (East Rowan) was named the Conference Carolinas Indoor Field Athlete of the Week on Wednesday.
Webb continued his impressive season with a record-tying performance at the Hilton Garden Invitational, equaling the JDL Center mark with a vault of 4.90 meters to finish third out of 50 competitors. His finish was the highest of any non-NCAA Division I competitor.
Webb has put together a strong indoor season for the Bobcats, setting a new school record and moving into a tie for fourth on the national leader board with a vault of 5.00 meters.

College softball

Belmont Abbey freshman Samantha Jacobs (North Rowan) made her first college start in the circle on Wednesday and won 6-1 against SAC preseason favorite Lenoir-Rhyne.
Jacobs pitched a complete game, striking out eight, walking two and allowing seven hits.
It was Belmont Abbey’s first softball win against L-R.
Women’s hoops

Pfeiffer’s Christina Harvey was named Conference Carolinas Player of the Week after averaging 13 rebounds and 20.5 points on 59-percent shooting.
• Former Central Davidson star Jazmine Charles scored 18 points and led Lenoir-Rhyne to a 55-53 SAC win against Wingate on Wednesday.

College baseball

Carson-Newman pounded Pfeiffer 10-3 at Ferebee Field on Tuesday. Bo Ausmus hit a three-run homer for C-N.

Prep hoops

South Davidson’s girls stayed unbeaten in the YVC with a 71-53 win against North Moore on Wednesday.
Holly Wall scored 20 points, and Larsen Sigmon added 16 for the Wildcats.
• The Northwest Cabarrus girls got 10 points each from Madison Swift, Jasmine Davis and Shatiya Bost and beat Hickory Ridge 63-42 for another SPC win on Tuesday.
• The Northwest Cabarrus boys won 74-67 against Hickory Ridge on Tuesday.
J.D. Murray scored 19 points for the Trojans. Jesse Metz and Andrew Wheet scored 12 each.
• The A.L. Brown girls beat Mount Pleasant 70-51 on Tuesday. Aitana Grant led the Wonders with 12 points, and Talethia Alexander had 10.
Victoria Harper scored 23 for the Tigers.
• Davie’s girls lost to R.J. Reynolds 53-45.
Haleigh Hatfield scored 20 points for the War Eagles, and Amy Steller scored 18.

The JDL indoor track and field facility opened in January of last year.
The 1A/2A/3A meet will start at 9 a.m., with the 4A meet set for 4 p.m.

Prep swimming

NCHSAA state championships in all classifications of swimming and diving are set for the Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary.
The championships will kick off on Thursday with the 4A event, followed on Friday by the 3A championships and then conclude on Saturday with the 1-A/2-A competition.
The diving for all classifications will occur at Pullen Aquatic Center in Raleigh.

North Hills hoops

The North Hills varsity girls lost to Hickory Christian Academy 48-41 in overtime.
C.C. Lyerly led the Eagles with 14 points and seven rebounds. Abby Lane had nine points and four assists. Natalie Whicker scored five points.
Taylor Foster had 10 rebounds, three assists and three blocks.
Cassidy Burell scored 18 for the Knights.

7th-grade girls hoops

West Rowan Middle’s girls lost to Corriher Lipe 34-24. West was led by Morgan Corriher with seven points. Emily Spry scored five.
Parker Greene had eight rebounds and four steals, while Madison Myers added six rebounds.
West is at China Grove on Monday.

7th-grade boys hoops

Caleb Mauldin’s 16 points and 13 rebounds paced West Rowan Middle to a 50-26 win over Corriher-Lipe.
Logan Sproul and Cole Myers both finished with eight points for the Bulldogs (4-2). Devin Turner had 10 rebounds.

Sacred Heart hoops

Sacred Heart’s jayvee boys finished the CCISAA basketball tournament with wins over Concordia Lutheran (43-33) and Salisbury Academy (46-32).
Against Concordia, Jack Fisher led the Dolphins with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Patrick Taylor added 11 points, and Josh Faulkner scored six.
In the win over Salisbury Academy, Taylor had a tournament-high 20 points. Fisher had 10 points and nine assists. Eric Turnbull pulled down 10 rebounds and led the Dolphin defense.
Salisbury Academy was led by Sam Combs with 11 points and George Fisher with seven.
Jack Fisher, who averages a double-double, was named all-tournament.

Soccer clinic

Catawba soccer and FC Carolina Alliance (FCCA) will be hosting a free soccer clinic on Saturday Feb. 9, from 10 a.m until noon, at the Catawa soccer fields. The clinic is available to all children ages 4-10.
Ages 4-6 should attende from 10-11 a.m. and ages 7-10 from 11 until noon.
Children attending the clinic should wear soccer-appropriate attire, including cleats. Bring a bottle of water and also bring a soccer ball if possible. The clinic will serve as an “open house” for children and parents to experience elite soccer training through FCCA.
In addition, there will be an opportunity to sign up on site for FCCA’s spring Munchkin and Pre Academy programs. Each program starts at the end of February and runs for eight weeks through the beginning of May.

Local golf

Clifford Full of Salisbury had a hole-in-one Wednesday at Tillery Tradition Golf Course near Albemarle.
Full used a 6-iron on the 160-yard No. 8 hole. Witnessing the feat was Harry Agner.
•Fifty-two GARS members played a Captain’s Choice format at Corbin Hills earlier this week.
Two teams tied for first at minus-9.
The team of Bill Bradley, Ross Howard, Clive Mahaffey and Tom Talbert won the scorecard playoff with the tema of Bobby Clark, Frank Masingo, Steve Masingo and David Scearce.
Two teams finished at minus-8.

David Wilson won closest to the pin on No. 2, while Allen Hammill won the longest putt on No. 9.
• The UNC Charlotte club baseball team will hold a golf tournament on April 6 at Corbin Hills.

Baseball sign-ups for Spencer Little League and Franklin Ellis Coach Pitch are under way.
Sign-ups are for boys and girls baseball for ages 4-15.
Division are Coach Pitch, Minors, Majors, and Juniors.
Sign-ups are Friday, Feb. 8, from 4-7 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 9 from 9 until noon.
