EAST SPENCER — Fire officials say they aren’t sure what caused a late Wednesday night fire at a vacant home on Robin Circle.
When crews arrived at 11 p.m. to 205 Robin Circle, they found flames shooting through the roof.
“It had appeared vacant for quite some time. It had a lot of vegetation around it,” said Rowan County Fire Marshal Aaron Youngblood.
Fire crews had reported the overgrown brush surrounding the home made fighting the fire tough. Firefighters never went inside the home, but tackled the fire from outside.
Youngblood said someone may have been staying in the home without permission. The fire didn’t appear to be intentionally set. Officials said they may not be able to determine a cause, but the fire started in a back room. It was reported earlier a wall collapsed, but Youngblood said it was actually an overhang in the back of the house that fell. The fire was declared under control at 11:45 p.m.
