Catawba splits on road with Carson-Newman

Elizabeth Merritt scored 25 points for Catawba on Saturday and led the Indians to a 66-58 SAC win at Carson-Newman.
Merritt’s day included 11-for-12 foul shooting.
Catawba (9-7, 5-3) took the lead early in the second half.
Carson-Newman (10-5, 4-4) pulled within four points with 2:30 remaining, but the Indians were deadly at the foul line down the stretch,
Chloe Bully had 17 points, six rebounds, four assists and four steals for the Indians.
Quaneasia Coleman scored 13 points. Antionette McPhail had seven rebounds.
Taylor May (South Rowan) scored three points for the Indians.
Shyra Clark scored 13 for the Eagles.

Carson-Newman (12-4, 5-3 SAC) used a 20-4 first half run to key a 76-65 wire-to-wire win against Catawba on Saturday afternoon at Holt Fieldhouse.
Catawba (5-11, 2-6 SAC) cut a 12-point halftime deficit to three on several occasions but couldn’t get over the hump.
“We punched them pretty good first half and I’m not sure they ever got completely settled,” Carson-Newman head coach Chuck Benson said. “We came out a little flat in the second half, but overall we made just enough stops and just enough baskets to pull out the win.”
Carson-Newman (12-4, 5-3 SAC) got 23 points from Antoine Davis and 18 from Ish Sanders.
The Eagles forced 16 turnovers while only giving it away 11 times.
“We knew they had some young players on the court and decided to go with the pressure on their young guards,” Benson said. “It paid off.”
Tyrece Little scored 17 on 7-for-13 shooting to lead the Indians.
Lee Martin had a big first half for the Indians and finished with 16 points. Chris Watson had 10 points and eight boards.

Pfeiffer’s women’s basketball team rolled to an 89-32 Conference Carolinas win against Converse in Spartanburg, S.C.
Brittany Cox scored 23 points, while Christina Harvey had 18 for the Falcons (13-3, 8-3).
The Valkyries are 0-16.
Livingstone women
Livingstone’s women’s basketball lost to J.C. Smith 77-62 at Trent Gym on Saturday.
Brittany Dorsett hit six 3-pointers for the Golden Bulls (5-12, 2-6) and scored 20 points.
Jasmine Murray scored 13 for the Blue Bears, while Kelcyn Manurs had 10.
