South Carolina State defensive tackle Javon Hargrave (North Rowan) was named to the College Sports Journal FCS All-Freshman Team announced on Tuesday.
Hargrave (6-2, 295) started 10 of 11 contests for the Bulldogs, recording 45 total tackles, 26 unassisted, with five tackles for loss and three sacks.
The Bulldog standout was one of six players from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference named to the squad.

Super Bowl
Two Catawbaalumni and former teammates will be across the field from each other in New Orleans in the upcoming Super Bowl XLVII.
San Francisco 49ers defensive line Coach Jim Tomsula (Class of 1990) and Baltimore Ravens kicking consultant Randy Brown (1989) will share a Catawba connection.

Wonders fall at horn
Concord’s Connor Burchfield’s 3-pointer beat the buzzer and the A.L. Brown Wonders on Wednesday at Bullock Gym.
It was the first SPC loss for A.L. Brown, which had a chance to put the game away but missed free throws in the final minutes.
Tevin Stark led the Wonders with 14 points. Derrick Copeland and Braxton Waddell scored 11 each, and Tydus Parks had 10.
For Concord, ranked No. 1 in 3A and 6-0 in the SPC, Burchfield scored 20, Jerry Burk had 16, and Darren Black had 10.

Catawba’s men’s basketball team rolled 81-64 against SAC opponent Mars Hill at Goodman Gym on Wednesday.
Tyrece Little led the Indians (5-10, 2-5) with 20 points and 10 rebounds.
Lee Martin had 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Reggie Perkins (15), Elon Edwards (12) and Vismantas Marijosius (11) also scored in double figures.
Khouraichi Thiam led the Lions (3-12, 0-7) with 22 points and 13 rebounds.

Livingstone’s men’s basketball team handled Fayetteville State 76-59 in CIAA action at Trent Gym on Wednesday.
There was no letdown after Saturday’s big win at Shaw.
Jody Hill led the Blue Bears (14-3, 6-2) with 15 points. Anthony Welch scored 14 points, and Eladio Espinoza had 11.
Espinoza and Tyler Johnson had seven boards apiece.
Ethan Anderson returned from an ankle injury and contributed five points and four boards.
Tyrrel Tate scored 21 for the Broncos (8-9, 3-5).

Kelcyn Manurs exploded for 27 points for the Blue Bears (7-10, 3-5). Cierra York scored 14, and Jasmine Murray had 12.
Akysia Resper led the Broncos (15-3, 7-1) with 18 points. DaQuondra Cuthbertson (North Rowan) played 15 minutes and scored two points.

West Rowan’s wrestlers lost 37-36 on criteria to West Iredell in an NPC match on Tuesday.

Prep hoops
Carson-East, South-West Iredell and North Davidson-Davie basketball games have been moved up from Friday to today due to the weather forecast.
• Note that Salisbury-North Rowan on Saturday will be played at North.
• Thanks to North Hills for sending in official stats for Salisbury’s Buster Hillie and North Rowan’s Oshon West for the 2010-11 season the played at North Hills.
Hillie scored 107 points for the Eagles, averaging 11.9 points per game.
West scored 315 points, averaging 14.3 points per game.
That gives West an official total of 1,147 career points.

Rowan Rage softball
Rowan Rage is holding softball tryouts at Rockwell Elementary School at noon this Saturday.
Age divisions are 14-under tournament division and 14-18 high school and showcase divisions. The rain makeup date is 2 p.m. on Sunday.
Tryouts are for any girls interested in playing tournament softball. The high school division is open to all local high school girls and rising freshmen.

Sacred Heart basketball
Sacred Heart’s varsity girls won 24-11 against St. Mark.
Julia Honeycutt led the Dolphins with eight points, Payton Russell scored seven. Also contributing were Dakota Insley, Annie Habeeb, Anne Marie Metz and Mary McCullough.
• Sacred Heart’s varsity boys lost 43-30 against St. Mark.
Will Casmus scored 10 points for the Dolphins. Michael Childress had nine. Other key contributors were Justin Boyd, William Clark, Will Taylor and Alex Antosek.

Pfeiffer athletics
Pfeiffer’s Brittany Cox was named Conference Carolinas Player of the Week for the third time.
Cox averaged 26.5 points per game in two victories.
• Pfeiffer’s baseball team was picked seventh in the Conference Carolinas preseason poll. Mount Olive was picked first, with Belmont Abbey second.

Athletic training
New members will be inducted into the Catawba Athletic Training Hall of Fame on Feb. 9.
The induction of the Class of 2013 will take place between noon and 2 p.m. in Peeler Crystal Lounge of the Robertson College-Community Center on campus.
The 2013 inductees, both from the Class of 1995, are Bryan Fass of Davidson and Carrie Graham of Coventry, Conn.
Jeff Tucker, of Jensen Beach, Fla., an inductee in the Class of 2012, was unable to attend last year’s ceremony. Tucker will be on hand at this year’s event to be officially recognized.
The Athletic Training Hall of Fame inducted its inaugural class in 2011.

8th-grade tournament
Erwin’s girls defeated Mooresville 29-26 for the conference tournament championshipat China Grove on Wednesday.
No. 2 seed Erwin (15-2) avenged a loss to Mooresville (14-3) in the seventh-grade finals a year ago. Mooresville, Erwin and Knox shared the regular-season championship.
Breya Philpot had 10 points, eight rebounds, seven blocked shots, six steals and three assists. Micah Furr had nine points, including a big 3-pointer in the third period and a clutch basket late.
Destiny Jackson had six points for the winners, including two drives for crucial layups in the final minutes. Ashlyn Mills had six rebounds, three steals and a big basket late in the game.
It was the fifth tournament title for coach Allison Adams. Her team went 30-4 in two years, winning one regular-season championship, one co-championship and the tournament. The Eagles went 14-0 at home over two seasons.
Mooresville was led by Sara Vanhoy with eight points, seven in a hot streak in the second quarter that cut Erwin’s lead from 14-5 to 14-12. Sehrena Hull scored six points for the Red Imps, and Carlee Brawley got all five of her points in the fourth quarter, when she knocked in a 3-pointer.
Mooresville, coched by Jenna Sullivan and Rachel Bustle, went 28-6 over two seasons.
Boys
No. 1 seed Mooresville capped an undefeated season by topping No. 3 Knox 64-57 in Wednesday’s tournament championship game.
Coach Chip Pickard’s Red Imps (17-0) were led by 6-foot-6 Jay Davis with 35 points, 27 rebounds and five blocked shots. Chris Ingramadded 12 points and nine boards. Gavin Stewart had eight points and seven rebounds. Noah Allen contributed 13 assists. Jace Donaldson added five points.
Mooresville, coached by Chip Pickard, also won the seventh-grade title, beating Knox in the finals. The Red Imps went 33-1 over two seasons, losing only in the regular season last year to Knox.
Mooresville led 15-12 after a quarter and 31-30 at halftime. Knox led briefly in the second half and was tied at 45-all early in the final period. Mooresville took the lead for keeps on two free throws by Stewart and eventually led by 13.
Paris Hillie poured in 21 points — 15 in the first half — to lead coach Dominique Bates’ Trojans, who finished 12-5. Cameron Horne scored 15 points. Tre Oates added six points. Shaleek Williams had seven rebounds. Alonzo Sirleaf also had seven boards before fouling out with 4:36 to play.
• In Mooresville’s 54-41 win against North Rowan in the semis, Davis scored 19 points, and Ingram had 16.
Joseph Scott led the Mavericks with 17, and Jayson Delgado scored 11.

Local golf
Corbin Hills Golf Club will be hosting its annual Spring Two-Man team event on Saturday and Sunday, April 13-14th. The format is 6-6-6 (Captains Choice – Best Ball – Texas Scramble) both days.
Teams will be flighted after Saturday’s round.
