High Rock Dam gates opened to feed Yadkin River

Steady rains and melting snow — where does all that water go?

Around here, most of it ends up flowing into the streams and creeks that feed the Yadkin River. And that, of course flows into High Rock Lake.

Last weekend, the reservoir was so full it swallowed trees along the shoreline, and drivers on the Bringle Ferry Road bridge might have felt they could touch the water from their windows. Operators at High Rock Dam opened up seven of the structure’s 10 gates to let the excess flow on down the river.

The thundering falls made for quite a sight, and sound.

So that’s where all that water goes.
