Andrew Thomas Head Jr. 62, of 411 Elm St., Granite Quarry, died Wednesday morning following a single-vehicle collision. Head and his wife, Linda, were traveling on North Main Street (Old 80) toward Faith Road when he slumped over the wheel.
Linda Head grabbed the wheel and the 1998 Mazda pickup continued through the intersection, passed a stop sign and struck the front porch of a house at 1519 Faith Road, belonging to Sara Sale.
Salisbury Police Capt. Shelia Lingle said the pickup missed hitting a guywire and telephone pole. When emergency personnel arrived, Head had already died. He was pronounced dead by emergency personnel at the scene, Lingle said.
Linda Head had very minor injuries, including a cut to her head. She was not taken to the hospital, but treated at the scene. Lingle said it does not appear the wreck caused his death.
Sale said she was awakened by the crash, which occurred just before 8 a.m. The pickup careened into her porch steps and knocking down the metal awning that covered the bricked porch steps.
She’s lived at the house for 60 years, Sale said, and was still “rattled” by the crash hours later. Sale’s yard still showed signs of the crash as tire impressions from the truck stretched near the edge of her driveway up to the porch.
