SALISBURY — A Rowan County deputy was involved in a minor wreck during a car chase with a woman who fled a traffic stop with a child on board, authorities said.
Serena Christine Dyer, 26, of Faith Road, is charged with child abuse, among other things.
Authorities arrested Dyer around 3:30 a.m. Sunday near Logan Berry Lane in Granite Quarry. They began chasing Dyer when she fled from a traffic stop on U.S. 52, a report said.
Dyer paused at the traffic stop momentarily, deputies said. She then told officers she was having trouble finding her license.
When authorities asked her to pull to the side of the road, Dyer gunned it and sped off toward Rockwell, deputies said.
Deputy B.J. Broere was among the officers who pursued Dyer, the report said.
An incident report said Broere hit the brakes when he saw a civilian vehicle approaching the intersection of U.S. 52 and Crescent Road. His vehicle slid into the grass and hit a street sign. The damage was minor and Broere was not injured, Rowan County Capt. John Sifford said.
A Rockwell Police officer later arrested Dyer.
An arrest report did not indicate the age of the child inside Dyer’s vehicle.
She was charged with felony fleeing to elude, misdemeanor child abuse and misdemeanor resisting, obstructing or delaying an officer. The report said she was also charged with driving with a revoked license.
Dyer remained in Rowan County jail Monday evening under a $5,000 bond.
