Livingstone’s men’s basketball team won 85-72 on Thursday at Bowie State in the CIAA opener for both teams.
The Blue Bears (9-1) trailed by four points at halftime, but they shot 56 percent in the second half, including 5-for-8 on 3-pointers.
Jody Hill nailed five 3s and poured in 26 points to lead the Blue Bears. A 6-foot-guard, Hill was a junior college All-American at Delta College in Saginaw, Mich., last season.
Mark Thomas (17) and Omar Ford-Bey (15) also had big scoring nights, and 6-foot-8 Eladio Espinoza had 12 points and nine boards.
Livingstone made only nine turnovers while forcing 22.
Byron Westmoreland scored 21 for the Bulldogs.
Livingstone is on a tough road trip. The Blue Bears play at Virginia Union Saturday and at Lincoln (Pa.) on Monday.

• Drew Absher (Davie) got 11 minutes of playing time for VMI in a 110-54 rout of Shenandoah on Wednesday.
• Alex Weant (Salisbury) scored three points for Roanoke in an 82-72 loss to St. Mary’s College on Wednesday.
Weant scored four in Tuesday’s 96-76 romp against William Peace.

College women’s hoops
Livingstone’s women’s basketball team lost its CIAA opener 76-61 at Bowie State’s Jordan Arena on Thursday.
Livingstone shot 34 percent from the field, went 5-for-22 on 3s and shot only 53.3 percent from the foul line.
Ashley Walker led the Blue Bears (4-6) with 18 points and seven rebounds.
Cierra York scored 13.
Kammera Johnson went 5-for-5 on 3-pointers and scored 21 for the hot-shooting Bulldogs (4-5), who shot 17-for-27 from long distance.

• In Fayetteville State’s 52-37 win against Chowan on Thursday, DaQuondra Cuthbertson (North Rowan) hit both her field-goal attempts and grabbed three rebounds while getting 18 minutes of action for the Broncos.
• De’Rya Wylie (Salisbury) had four points and three rebounds in nine minutes of action for Elizabeth City State in a 96-86 victory against Shaw on Thursday.
• Radford returned to action Thursday with a 66-54 win against UNC Asheville.
Ayana Avery (West Rowan) hit four 3-pointers and scored 14 points for the Highlanders.
Ashia Holmes (Salisbury) played 13 minutes off the bench for Radford and had two points and three assists.
• Ayanna Holmes (Salisbury) and Olivia Rankin (Salisbury) played in Charlotte’s 70-53 win against Coppin State on Thursday. The 49ers are 10-3.
• Jessica Heilig (Salisbury) had 12 points and eight rebounds for Gardner-Webb before fouling out in Thursday’s 87-75 loss to Longwood.
Doreen Richardson (Salisbury) played six minutes for the Bulldogs.
• George Washington’s Shi-Heria Shipp (Salisbury) scored 13 points and had three steals in a 79-49 loss to St. Mary’s and had nine points in a 70-43 loss to eighth-ranked California.
George Washington’s next game is at North Carolina A&T on Sunday.

Prep football
Chad Tedder has been named as Central Davidson’s new head football coach.
Brad Morton stepped down after leading Central’s Spartans to a 7-6 record and their first playoff win in two decades.
Tedder was a defensive coach and coordinator at West Davidson for 16 years . He was head coach at East Rowan for the 2010 and 2011 seasons.
Tedder served as defensive coordinator at Central this season.
Tedder’s father, Jim, a Montgomery County native, was a longtime coach, including a stint in Kannapolis.

Adult baseball league
The Rowan Adult Baseball League is looking for new players and teams to join a spring league.
The league is open to players 30 and over. Games will be played on Sundays.
The league will start in April and end in September, with approximately 15 games, plus playoffs.
The league will be part of the national MSBL (Men’s Senior Baseball League).

On Thursday, the first round was played in the 5th Carolinas Young Amateur at the Pinewilld Country Club’s Magnolia Course in Pinehurst.

Prep swimming
In boys swimming, East Rowan scored 111 points to top NPC opponents West Iredell (108) and Carson (85).
East’s girls scored 125 to beat Carson (102) and West Iredell (56).

Middle school wrestling
Southeast edged North Rowan Middle 49-42, and Mooresville beat Corriher-Lipe 73-24.

8th-grade hoops
Erwin’s girls won 32-23 against China Grove.
Breya Philpot led the Eagles (9-2) with 12 points and 16 rebounds. Micah Furr had six points and four steals. Ashlyn Mills had seven rebounds. Bree Medlin had four steals.
Keara McClay scored 11 for the Red Devils (3-8), and Madilyn Jones scored seven.
• Dillon Norton scored seven of his 22 points in overtime as China Grove beat Erwin 47-43.
Cameron Corriher scored nine for the Red Devils (4-7), and Walker Joyce had five.
Lucas Morton led the Eagles (4-7) with 11 points. Jonathan Brindle and Tate Houpe scored eight each. Ellis Taylor added seven points.

Umpire clinic
The National Softball Association will hold an umpire clinic at the Salisbury Civic Center on Sunday, Jan. 20, for slow-pitch officials.
Registration is at 10 a.m., and the clinic lasts until 2 p.m. The fee is $56. Those interested in umpiring in NSA leagues or tournament play should plan on attending. Rules and new mechanics will be taught by Eastern Zone umpire-in-chief Mike Snyder.

East Rowan camps
East Rowan coach Brian Hightower is holding three upcoming camps.
Hitting camp is on Jan. 12 from 1-4 and costs $30.
Fielding and catching camp is on Jan. 19 from 1-3 and costs $20.
Pitching camp is from 1-3 on Jan. 26 and costs $20.
Attend all three camps for $65.
The camps will be held at Staton Field, weather permitting. Alternate locations are the East Rowan and Erwin gyms.
Players can pay the day of the camp. They can register online using the winter camp registration form on the East Rowan Mustang Baseball website.
