May leads Catawba past Blue Bears

Catawba senior Taylor May (South Rowan) had her first career double-double to lead the Indians to a 76-54 win against Livingstone in women’s basketball action on Sunday afternoon at Goodman Gym.
May had 18 points and 10 rebounds.
Elizabeth Merritt scored 14 for Catawba (5-5), which ended a three-game losing streak. Antoinette McPhail had 11 rebounds and eight points.
Cierra York scored 12 for the Blue Bears (4-5). Ashley Walker had 10 points and Tiffany Evans grabbed 10 rebounds.
Catawba shot 41 percent, while the Blue Bears shot 29 percent.
The Indians led 41-21 at halftime and were ahead by as many as 30 in the second half.

Catawba men fall
Catawba’s men’s basketball team lost 77-58 at UNC Pembroke on Sunday afternoon.
Catawba (3-7) has dropped six straight.
George Blakeney scored 18 points for the Braves (8-4), who pulled away for good late in the first half.
Julian Sampah had 13 points and seven boards to pace the Indians.
Lee Martin had nine points and seven rebounds, and Nick Houston (Carson) was a bright spot with three 3-pointers.
The Braves won the rebounding battle 43-30, and Catawba shot only 38 percent.
Catawba won’t play again until Jan. 9.

Local golf
The McCanless Couples played with a four-man Captain’s Choice format Sunday.
The winning team members were Gene Seaford, Tim Earnhardt and Sharon Miller.
Second place went to Ricky Honeycutt, Susan Houston, Don Goodnight and Treva Honeycutt.
The McCanless Couples played with heavy hearts.
David Huneycutt lost his mother, and Joan Stebbins lost playing partner Charlie Gillispie.

Prep wrestling
East Rowan’s Jason Deutsch was the champion at 113 pounds at North Davidson’s prestigious King of the Mat tournament.
Deutsch pinned Ledford’s Carter Ellenberger and Glenn’s Travis Allen and decisioned Andrew McFarland (Carthage, N.Y.) and North Rowan’s Marc Gonzalez to reach the final.
Deutsch won via a defensive pin against Pinecrest’s Irwin Enriquez for the title.

Prep hoops
Local basketball teams are off until Friday with the exception of North Rowan.
North will play at home against South Davidson on Wednesday in a game moved up from the original schedule. Both girls teams are 4-0 in the YVC.
• Champions crowned in the CMC-NorthEast tournament were the Independence boys and the Weddington girls.
Independence won the boys final 67-48 against Weddington. Weddington won the girls final with a 32-26 victory against Concord. A.L. Brown’s boys (7-4) won twice in the tournament to place fifth.
