Former police officer David Bates faces embezzlement charges
A former police officer accused of embezzlement is behind bars under a $200,000 bond.
David Michael Bates, 48, of Kingsbridge Road of Salisbury, is facing 40 counts of embezzling more than $100,000.
Bates is a former China Grove and Cooleemee police officer, who ran for the Rowan-Salisbury Board of Education in 2000.
According to Bates’ LinkedIn page, he is the president of the Apple Baking Company, which is well-known of its Apple Ugly dessert.
He is expected to appear in court at 9 a.m. Tuesday.
