SALISBURY — The Rowan-Salisbury Board of Education has been named the grand prize winner by the N.C. School Boards Association, receiving the top overall honor for excellence in educational programs.
“This award shows to the world that we are leaders in successfully teaching students through technology,” said board Vice-Chairwoman Jean Kennedy.
The award is designed to recognize school boards across the state for demonstrating outstanding educational programs that maximize student achievement.
Each school district that applied for was required to illustrate the use of an established program that is sustainable, innovative or exemplary, connected to the board’s vision and supported by the board, and includes concepts that can be replicated and has made a difference for students.
Winners were selected in four categories including elementary, middle and high grades as well as the grand prize.
The Rowan-Salisbury Board of Education received the grand prize award recognition for their implementation 1:1 mobile learning in the school system.
“This is just one example of the achievement being obtained from our teachers using technology as an instructional tool to engage students in the curriculum,” said Phil Hardin, the school system’s executive director of technology.
The Rowan-Salisbury School System continues to receive state and national recognitions for its advancements and innovation in the use of technology.  
“Technology is an important component and instructional tool used to engage students in learning through the curriculum,” said Superintendent Dr. Judy Grissom. “Teaching our students with the very technology tools that they use every day, both on and off the school campus, will lead them to become successful citizens and globally competitive in the job market.”  
Rowan-Salisbury Board of Education member Kay Wright Norman joined Kennedy, Grissom and Hardin to accept the award.
