Avery leads Radford win

Ayana Avery (West Rowan) came off the bench and scored 17 points in 23 minutes for Radford in Saturday’s 72-55 win against William & Mary.
Avery hit a shot from halfcourt at the end of the first half.
• Doreen Richardson (Salisbury) scored six points in Gardner-Webb’s 70-62 loss to Longwood on Sunday. Jessica Heilig (Salisbury) pulled down five rebounds for the Bulldogs.
• Shi-Heria Shipp (Salisbury) had nine points, five rebounds and two assists for George Washington in a 57-54 loss to American on Saturday.
• Ayanna Holmes (Salisbury) had two points and two assists for Charlotte in an 81-73 win against Stetson on Saturday.
•Katelynne Poole (East Rowan) scored two points for Brevard in Saturday’s 63-57 win against Lees-McRae.
• De’Rya Wylie (Salisbury) had seven points and three rebounds for Elizabeth City State in a recent 54-50 loss to Bloomfield.

Sacred Heart hoops
The Sacred Heart jayvee boys beat Concordia Lutheran 39-21.
Eric Turnbull had 11 points and eight rebounds for the Dolphins, and Jack Fisher had 10 points and 12 rebounds. Sean Archer had six points and five steals. Spencer Blackwell and Zach Robinette also scored.

College football
Arkansas’ Chris Smith (West Rowan) ranks fourth in the SEC in sacks with 9.5 and is tied for fifth with 13 tackles for loss. Smith received SEC Defensive Player of the Week recognition for the Tulsa and Jacksonville State contests.
• Virginia’s Kevin Parks is seventh in the ACC in rushing with 160 attempts for 734 yards and five TDs.

Prep football
The annual Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas game is next Saturday at Gibbs Stadium in Spartanburg, S.C.
Kickoff is at 1 p.m.
Local golf
The McCanless Couples played with a four-man Captain’s Choice format on Sunday. The winning team was Phyllis Myers, Ricky Honeycutt, Roy Green and Tommy Reynolds. The second-place team was Don Goodnight, Treva Honeycutt, Beverly Cobb and Bryan Reynolds.
Closest to the pin was won by Kim Kincaid. Longest putt was won by Bryan Reynolds.

Middle school wrestling
West Rowan Middle defeated Corriher-Lipe 64-33.

Youth cross country
Two of the J.F. Hurley YMCA Warriors competed in the USATF Junior Olympics in Albuquerque, N.M.
Emma Calvert did an outstanding job at the 5,000-foot altitude for her first year running. She was 92nd out of 153 competitors in the 8-under girls division. She had a time of 9:29 in a 2K.
Andrew Burgess was less than 100 percent with an injured foot but finished 84th out of 263 boys in the 11-12 division. Burgess ran 11:41 in a 3k.
