EAST FLAT ROCK (AP) — The N.C. Highway Patrol says a Polk County man is dead after he was hit by a tractor-trailer on I-26.
The patrol said 22-year-old David Winter died at the scene Monday.
State troopers say Winter had parked his car on the shoulder of the westbound lanes near the Polk-Henderson county line and was in the right lane when he was hit. A second vehicle then hit the man.
The patrol said the trucker won’t be charged.
Investigators aren’t sure why Winter parked his car or why he was in the roadway. The patrol said his car’s engine was still warm, the doors were locked and the keys were not in the vehicle.
