Fire officials have not confirmed the cause of a Gold Knob Road home that burned Tuesday just after lunchtime.
The fire occurred at 1135 Gold Knob Road, where Betty Morgan, a retired educator, had lived since 1956.
Morgan was not in the home at the time of the fire.
According to Fire Investigator Deborah Horne, the fire originated in the attic. The investigation is ongoing.
Multiple fire departments responded to the fire, many of whom shuttled water from a fire hydrant at nearby Sides Road. Gold Knob Road is located just outside Rockwell.
Fire officials said at the scene, the angles of the roof made it difficult to extinguish the fire. Firefighters had to tackle the fire from atop a ladder truck. A firefighter manned a hose extended over the home.
A United States Postal worker driving by the home called 911, neighbors said at the scene.
Fire officials remained on the scene hours after the fire, putting out hot spots.
