GREER, S.C. (AP) — The National Weather Service says snow from the Tropical Storm Sandy superstorm is still possible over western North Carolina.
Forecasters said this morning that snowfall totals in the western North Carolina mountains totals as much as 5 inches so far. Only Jefferson in Ashe County was reporting snow at 6 a.m.
The weather service says up to 4 to 6 inches of snow is possible in the higher elevations today. Another inch or 2 could fall in the Asheville area.
A winter storm warning continues in effect until 6 a.m. Wednesday for Ashe, Avery, Buncombe, Haywood, Madison, Mitchell, Swain, Watauga, Yancey and northern Jackson counties.
Winds are expected to range from 25 to 35 mph with gusts of up to 60 mph.
In Rowan County, forecasters are calling for a chance of rain with a high in the low 50s. It will be breezy, with a west wind around 21 mph and gusts as high as 36 mph.
The chance of precipitation is 40 percent, with less than a tenth of an inch possible.
Tonight will be mostly cloudy, with a low around 37. West wind 15 to 17 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph.
The forecast is about the same for Wednesday, with winds lessening. There is a chance for frost early Wednesday.
Sunshine returns in Thursday’s forecast, with highs around 60.
