SALISBURY – Also during Tuesday’s meeting, City Council:
• Congratulated Salisbury-Rowan Utilities employees for receiving the National Association of Clean Water Agencies’ Platinum 8 and Silver Peak Performance Awards for 2011, as well as the N.C. Area Wide Optimization Award for 2011.
Seven facilities out of nearly 300 in the state received a Platinum Award last year. The award was presented to Martin Trexler, the city’s wastewater treatment plant operations manager.
The Silver Award for the Second Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant was presented to senior wastewater treatment plant operators Charles Wood and James Barringer.
The city’s water treatment plant was one of 35 in the state honored for surpassing federal and state drinking water standards for 2011.
The N.C. Area Wide Optimization Award recognizes systems that demonstrate outstanding turbidity and microbial removal, two factors in determining drinking water quality. The award was presented to Keith Bowersox, water treatment plant operations manager.
• Commented on recently completed sidewalk and streetscape improvements to North Lee Street. The state picked up the $290,000 tab to replace crumbling, narrow sidewalks in the 300 block that have threatened to derail economic development.
City planner Lynn Raker led the effort.
• Appointed Dianne Greene to the RowanWorks Economic Development Commission board and Donna Fayko of Rowan County Social Services, Barbara Ellis of Rowan County Health Department, Kaye Green of the VA Medical Center and Rick Parker of Rowan Regional Medical Center to the West End Steering Committee.
