'The Color Purple' comes to the Meroney stage

Based on Alice Walker’s Pulitzer-prize winning novel, the musical “The Color Purple,” opens at the Meroney Theatre Oct. 25. With a cast of 30, the production features a live orchestra playing a score that features jazz, ragtime, gospel, African music and blues.
“The Color Purple” is the story of the downtrodden Celie, played by Tameka Massey Brown, who is eventually finds the strength to triumph over adversity.
The Broadway show was a huge hit, nominated for 11 Tony Awards including Best Musical, Best Book, Best Original Score and a Grammy. Stephen Spielberg’s movie version in 1985, starring Whoopi Goldberg, Oprah Winfreey and Danny Glover, was nominated for 11 Academy Awards.
Performance dates are Oct. 25-27 and Nov. 1-3 at 7:30 p.m. A Sunday matinee will be performed Oct. 28 at 2:30 p.m.
Box office hours are Tues-Fri: 9 a.m.-1 p.m.
