Elect 2012: Candidate forums start tonight

SALISBURY – Candidates for local, state and Congressional offices are taking the stage in Salisbury this week for two evening forums.
They will field questions from moderator Michael Bitzer, political science professor at Catawba College, along with readers of the Salisbury Post.
The candidate forums will be held today and Wednesday, starting at 6 p.m., in the Tom Smith Auditorium at Catawba College.
Tonight’s event includes four people running for county commissioner and eight candidates for the local school board.
On Wednesday, state and Congressional candidates will go head-to head in their respective races.
Here’s the full schedule of the forums, which are sponsored by Catawba, the Post and the Rowan County Chamber of Commerce:
Tuesday
• 6-7p.m. – Rowan-Salisbury Board of Education
East seat: James “Jim” Emerson, Josh Wagner
Salisbury seat: Bryce Beard, Chuck Hughes, Constance “Connie” Johnson, Quentin Woodward Jr.
Southeast seat: Susan H. Cox, Lynn G. Marsh
• 7:15-8 p.m. – Rowan County Board of Commissioners
Democrats: Leda Belk, Ralph Walton
Republicans: Mike Caskey, Craig Pierce
Wednesday
• 6-6:45 p.m. – U.S. House of Representatives District 5
U.S. Rep. Virginia Foxx, a Republican seeking her fifth term in office, faces Democratic challenger Elisabeth Motsinger.
• 7-7:45 p.m. – N.C. House of Representatives District77
N.C. Rep. Harry Warren, a Republican in his first term, is defending his seat against Bill Battermann, a Democrat.
• 8-8:45 p.m. – U.S. House of Representatives District 12
U.S. Rep. Mel Watt, a Democrat, is running for an 11th term against Republican Jack Brosch.
