SALISBURY – Food Lion hosted the second annual Knollwood Elementary School Math Night on Sept. 27 for 80 students and their families.
Children worked with friends and family to complete grade-appropriate math worksheets.
The worksheets were completed by walking around the grocery store on Jake Alexander Boulevard to find answers to questions about pricing, estimating weights of fruits and vegetables and how to make a healthy meal for a family.
“It was a great experience for the children to see that the math skills they are learning in school can be applied in the real world,” said Christy Wilson, Title One parent liaison and Knollwood PTA vice president. “The children and families enjoyed working together and won prizes for turning in completed worksheets during a raffle.”
Store manager Maclaren Oglesby provided cake, cookies, punch and sandwiches for the families.
Oglesby and Principal Shonda Hairston have created a community partnership between Knollwood and Food Lion No. 10.
