The opening reception for “Faces of Abundant Living,” a special exhibition at Waterworks in partnership with Abundant Living Adult Day Services, is today, Sept. 20 from 5-7 p.m. It is free and open to the public.
Now in its seventh year, this exhibit features a collection of portraits created by area artists that reveals the “faces” of those served by Abundant Living.
Abundant Living Adult Day Services provides care to frail elderly and disabled adults during the day.

Storyteller at Blue Vine
Singer, songwriter and storyteller Michael Reno Harrell, returns to the Blue Vine on Friday night. Harrell, a veteran entertainer sometimes described as “Andy Griffith with an edge,” will take the stage at 9 p.m.

Mercury Dime reunites
Mercury Dime, the popular band from the 1990s, is getting back together and will perform their first show in more than a decade to celebrate the re-release of their critically accalaimed album “Darkling.” Tripp Edwards will open the show at 8 p.m. with an acoustic set. Mercury Dime is Cliff Retallick, Darryl Jones, Eric Webster, Alan Wyric and Jimbo Martin.

Fiddler’s convention
GRANITE QUARRY – The 46th Granite Quarry Civitan Fiddler’s Convention is coming to East Rowan High School on Saturday, Oct. 6. There will be $1,700 in cash prizes, plus trophies and ribbons awarded.

Mayberry Days
MOUNT AIRY – More than a dozen folks with ties to The Andy Griffith Show will be honored guests this year at the 23rd annual Mayberry Days festival beginning next Thursday, Sept. 27. The festival, which runs through the 30th, will include a hometown tribute to native son Andy Griffith, who passed away in July, as well as appearances by many regulars as well as those who made frequent guest appearnces.
The Doug Dillard Tribute will be live in concert at the Andy Griffith Playhouse on Friday, Sept. 28.

New plays in Charlotte
CHARLOTTE – UNC-Charlotte’s Department of Theatre presents the inaugural “Center City Scenes,” a festival of new plays by local playwrights, on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 22-23, at UNC Charlotte Center City.
The festival features six short pieces, each about 15 minutes in length. Performances on Saturday will be at 5 p.m. in conjunction with UNC Charlotte Center City’s Community Day celebration. Sunday’s performances are at 2 p.m. Admission is free.

Titanic exhibition in Raleigh
RALEIGH – One hundred years after an iceberg sent the Titanic to the bottom of the icy North Atlantic, visitors to the NC Museum of Natural Sciences can follow that fateful voyage, take on the identity of a passenger, touch an iceberg and see more than 200 artifacts recovered from the broken ship’s debris field two-and-a-half miles beneath the surface.
