The opening reception for “Faces of Abundant Living,” a special exhibition at Waterworks in partnership with Abundant Living Adult Day Services, is today, Sept. 20 from 5-7 p.m. It is free and open to the public.
Now in its seventh year, this exhibit features a collection of portraits created by area artists that reveals the “faces” of those served by Abundant Living.
Abundant Living Adult Day Services provides care to frail elderly and disabled adults during the day.

Storyteller at Blue Vine
Singer, songwriter and storyteller Michael Reno Harrell, returns to the Blue Vine on Friday night. Harrell, a veteran entertainer sometimes described as “Andy Griffith with an edge,” will take the stage at 9 p.m.

Mercury Dime reunites
Mercury Dime, the popular band from the 1990s, is getting back together and will perform their first show in more than a decade to celebrate the re-release of their critically accalaimed album “Darkling.” Tripp Edwards will open the show at 8 p.m. with an acoustic set. Mercury Dime is Cliff Retallick, Darryl Jones, Eric Webster, Alan Wyric and Jimbo Martin.

Freeport playing at Davis Theatre
CONCORD – The contemporary smooth jazz group Freeport will play at the Davis Theatre next Thursday, Sept. 27, as part of the Davis Theatre’s Footlights series of performances by outstanding musicians in our region.

Fiddler’s convention
GRANITE QUARRY – The 46th Granite Quarry Civitan Fiddler’s Convention is coming to East Rowan High School on Saturday, Oct. 6. There will be $1,700 in cash prizes, plus trophies and ribbons awarded.
BBQ chicken and homemade desserts will be available for purchase. Admission to the event is $8 for adults, $2 for ages 6-12 and those under 6 get in free.

Christian metal night
Metal bands take the stage at another Christian metal night on Friday at The Inn. Featured will be The Skyline Setting, Heavenly Armored, Bridges He Burned, Of Oceans, Ekklasia, Blood of the Martyrs and Signals The Sky. The music starts at 6 p.m.
On Saturday night, Christian rock bands Alter Vibe, Shield of Salvation and Defenders of the Cross will begin playing at 7 p.m.

CONCORD – Old Courthouse Theatre presents “9 to 5: The Musical,” a hilarious story of friendship and revenge in the Rolodex era, with music and lyrics by Dolly Parton, based on the 20th Century Fox picture.

Ghostly doings
Join the Downtown Salisbury Ghost Walk on Friday, Sept. 21 at 8 p.m. in front of the Old Post Office building on the corner of Church and Innes St. The cost is $10 for adults. Children and students with a school ID are $5.
S.R. Paranormal from Lexington will lead the paranormal investigation on Friday, Sept. 28, investigating the haunting of the Looking Glass black box theater on N. Mother Goose at doll museum
SPENCER – On Saturday, Sept. 22, Mother Goose makes a special appearance at the Spencer Doll And Toy Museum for interactive story time.
At 1 p.m., children 5 and under will hear Mother Goose read “There was an Old Woman who Swallowed a Fly,” and make a take-home craft.
At 3 p.m., for kids ages 6-12, Mother Goose will reads “The Paper Bag Princess,” followed by a paper bag princess activity.

Mayberry Days
MOUNT AIRY – More than a dozen folks with ties to The Andy Griffith Show will be honored guests this year at the 23rd annual Mayberry Days festival beginning next Thursday, Sept. 27. The festival, which runs through the 30th, will include a hometown tribute to native son Andy Griffith, who passed away in July, as well as appearances by many regulars as well as those who made frequent guest appearnces.
The Doug Dillard Tribute will be live in concert at the Andy Griffith Playhouse on Friday, Sept. 28.

New plays in Charlotte
CHARLOTTE – UNC-Charlotte’s Department of Theatre presents the inaugural “Center City Scenes,” a festival of new plays by local playwrights, on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 22-23, at UNC Charlotte Center City.
The festival features six short pieces, each about 15 minutes in length. Performances on Saturday will be at 5 p.m. in conjunction with UNC Charlotte Center City’s Community Day celebration. Sunday’s performances are at 2 p.m. Admission is free.

Guitarist at DCCC
THOMASVILLE – New York guitarist David Burgess will visit Davidson County Community College to perform some of Brazil’s finest solo guitar music in two special concerts; one on the Davie Campus of DCCC at 12:30 p.m. on Sept. 25 and another at 12:30 p.m. on Sept. 27 in the Conference Center on the Davidson Campus of DCCC. Titanic exhibition in Raleigh
RALEIGH – One hundred years after an iceberg sent the Titanic to the bottom of the icy North Atlantic, visitors to the NC Museum of Natural Sciences can follow that fateful voyage, take on the identity of a passenger, touch an iceberg and see more than 200 artifacts recovered from the broken ship’s debris field two-and-a-half miles beneath the surface.
