John Knox (Salisbury) directed the Charleston (W. Va.) Golden Eagles to a 33-14 win against St. Joseph’s (Ind.) on Saturday. Knox’s breakout day included a 99-yard touchdown pass that set a school record.
Knox rushed for 53 yards on 11 carries and completed five passes for 145 yards and two touchdowns. His other TD pass was a 32-yard completion late in the first half.UNC Pembroke middle linebacker Cadarreus Mason (South Rowan) had a career game in the Braves’ 31-21 win against Fayetteville State on Saturday.Mason had six solo tackles and assisted on six others. One of Mason’s tackles was for loss.UNCP’s Ben DeCelle (East Rowan) had four catches for 18 yards, while T.J. Johnson (A.L. Brown) made two catches for 11 yards.Lenoir-Rhyne’s Ike Whitaker (Salisbury) rushed 14 times for 52 yards in the Bears’ 20-2 win against Davidson on Saturday.
Zach Long (Davie) made eight tackles for the Bears, one for loss.
In Wingate’s win against Albany State, Joseph So (Salisbury) started at center for the Bulldogs and Josh Patch (East) got the start at defensive tackle. He had one stop in the game.
Quentin Sifford (West) assisted on two tackles in West Liberty’s 14-13 win against Virginia State.
Catawba had five former West Rowan players on the field on some snaps in the win against Livingstone. Besides QB B.J. Sherrill, who threw for 317 yards and three TDs, receiver Trey Mashore, fullback Marco Gupton, tailback Wade Moore and offensive lineman Tim Pangburn saw action.
Moore broke one run for 16 yards, but was held to 27 yards on 13 carries. Mashore had a catch for 15 yards and returned a kickoff for 27 yards. Gupton had a 3-yard scoring run on his only carry.
Division I
Romar Morris (Salisbury) got 14 carries in UNC’s 28-27 loss to Wake Forest and made an impact with 70 rushing yards and a 4-yard scoring run.
In Arkansas’ stunning loss to Louisiana-Monroe, Chris Smith (West) had three tackles, including a sack for a 15-yard loss. Smith also was credited with two QB hurries.
K.P. Parks (West Rowan) had a quiet day in Virginia’s 17-16 win against Penn State. Parks rushed nine times for 26 yards.
Jon Crucitti (West) rushed three times for 16 yards in Army’s 42-7 loss at San Diego State.
Redshirt freshman Domonique Noble (West) made his college debut for Georgia Tech in a romp aganst Presbyterian.
Shaun Warren (Carson) rushed five times for 26 yards for Western Carolina in a 59-24 loss to Marshall. Warren broke one run for 13 yards. Warren also was employed on kickoff returns and had three runbacks for 54 yards.
Jamill Lott (A.L. Brown) started at cornerback in Appalachian State’s big win against Montana. He made four tackles and broke up a pass.
Kicker Michael Mazur (Salisbury) and defensive lineman Jeremiah Smith (Carson) are on the roster of the Charlotte 49ers. Charlotte is practicing this season and will begin play as a Division I school in 2013.
Javon Hargrave (North Rowan) had three tackles for South Carolina State in a loss to Bethune-Cookman.
Division III
Guilford’s Adam Smith (Davie) had a huge day in a loss to Methodist. The freshman, who played quarterback at Davie, had 13 catches for 134 yards and caught a touchdown pass in the fourth quarter.
Emory & Henry’s Matt Turchin (West) had three touchbacks on kickoffs and was 3-for-3 on PATs in a 21-8 win against Maryville. Turchin kicked a field goal in the Wasps’ opener the previous week.
In a loss to Randolph-Macon, Averett’s Zack Grkman (Carson) was credited with five solo tackles, and T.J. Smith (Carson) was in on two stops.
Hobie Proctor (West) averaged 56.3 yards on three kickoffs for Averett.
