SALISBURY – A Salisbury Police officer caught up with a crashed motorist Thursday night to check on her condition.
But the wreck was just getting started.
Officer J.N. Wilson stopped near a Chevrolet SUV about 9 p.m. The driver, however, pulled out of the ditch back onto U.S. 52 in Granite Quarry. Wilson was about 300 feet behind the driver, later identified as 30-year-old Leslie Wells Leazer, of Cannon Street in Rockwell, when authorities said she hit the first ditch.
After accelerating back onto the road, Wilson said he saw the SUV turn right onto Railroad Street and sideswipe a brick wall around a residence.
The vehicle then went into a second ditch, drove out and stopped in the middle of the roadway.
Wilson said Leazer had “very slurred speech” when he asked her if she was OK.
Once authorities opened the significantly damaged driver’s side door, Leazer was unsteady on her feet, an arrest report said.
At 9:24 p.m., she blew an Alco Sensor at the scene to test her blood alcohol level. The report said she blew a .30 BAC. She refused to blow a second time. At the department, a second test was taken and Leazer blew a .27 BAC.
She was charged with driving while impaired.
Leazer was in jail Friday under a $1,500 bond.
