CHINA GROVE – Town staff members have begun moving to another temporary location until an already-delayed construction project is complete.
The town has been renting the South Rowan Medical Mall at East Centerview Street since February 2011. Town officials learned a couple of months ago that Rowan Regional Medical Center will open a clinic in the facility beginning in October.
So on Wednesday, movers started placing furniture into office space at 333 N. Main St. that will eventually be occupied by the China Grove Fire Department.
The fire department has already moved its trucks into the left side of the building where new fire bays are located.
Once all the construction work is complete, the middle section of the building will become fire department office space, and the right side of the building will be the new town hall.
The construction project is months behind, with a fall completion date projected now.
Interim Town Manager Ken Deal said the staff has had to shift some things around because of delays. The town staff was originally supposed to move into its side of the building four months ago.
The staff has also had to rent space to store the furniture and office equipment it had already ordered or moved.
Deal expects movers to be done with relocating all town hall equipment by the end of the week.
Town hall should be up and running in this location by Tuesday, he said.
