Friday Football Fever: West Rowan at Davie preview

Published 12:00 am Friday, August 24, 2012

Time: 7:30 p.m.
Records: West 1-0; Davie 1-0
Series: Davie leads 26-13-2.
West coach Scott Young is 6-5 against the War Eagles.
West has won the last three meetings. The most recent Davie win was 35-21 at home in 2008. That was the last game West would lose before embarking on a celebrated 46-game winning streak that included three 3A state championships.
Last meeting: Davie threw for 371 yards against West in 2011, but West piled up 436 yards of offense and won 45-32 in Mount Ulla.
Last week: West beat Mooresville 21-14; Davie went on the road and thumped defending 4AA champ Greensboro Page 31-14.
Next week: West is at home against Salisbury; Davie travels to Taylorsville to play Alexander Central
Game notes:Scott Young goes for career win No. 150, and there’s no one he’d rather reach that milestone against than a program he respects. Young was an assistant at Davie before getting an opportunity to be West’s head coach in 1998.
There will be some men in this game, and the battle between Davie’s massive offensive line, led by N.C. State commitment Cole Blankenship, and West’s powerful defensive front, paced by Kiero Cuthbertson, will be something to behold.
Neither team passed a lot last week, but Davie was more effective, with Parker Correll hitting touchdown passes to Cameron Heaggans and Jonathan Wiseman.
West got 105 rushing yards from Desmond Jackson last week, while Davie got 105 yards from two-way standout A.J. Blaskievich and 239 from freshman Cade Carney. Davie workhorse Stephon Smoot (knee) missed the opener but may return to action tonight.
If Smoot can play, Carney might move to QB. — Mike London
