About 25,000 public school students in the Rowan-Salisbury and Kannapolis school systems will head back to class Monday, Aug. 27.
Students who attend North Hills Christian School headed back to class Wednesday. Other area private schools will also get under way soon. Cannon School and Rockwell Christian School start Monday and Salisbury Academy begins Wednesday.
“Power up for school,” the Post’s back-to-school guide, is designed to help students and parents be informed and prepared.
Here are a few things to pay attention to this year:
New faces
Rowan-Salisbury has five new principals and assistant principals this school year. Kannapolis is welcoming one new administrator. North Hills and Salisbury Academy have also hired new staff. Learn more about them on page 12D.
Lunch will be more nutritious
The U.S. Department of Agriculture has rolled out stricter guidelines to ensure students receive a balanced diet. Find out what that means on page 6D.
But it will cost more
Rowan-Salisbury and Kannapolis school are raising lunch prices. Students in Rowan will pay 15 cents more per meal, while those in Kannapolis will see a 10-cent increase. Find Rowan-Salisbury meal prices on page 6D and Kannapolis on page 14D.
Technology surge
iPads will multiply in the Rowan-Salisbury district; find out more on page 4D. Private schools are also doing more to boost their tech savvy; read more in our roundup on page 13D.
Travel safely
Make sure you know precautions your children should be taking when it comes to school-bus safety. Find tips on page 8D. And be sure you know the laws when it comes to stop-arms. There’s a breakdown on the same page.
Curriculum changes
Public schools will begin using new curriculum standards that set fewer yet clearer and higher expectations for students. Students will also begin taking end-of-year tests online. Read more on page 17D.
