Want to buy your own offshore light tower?

CAPE HATTERAS (AP) — It needs serious work, but a light tower off Cape Hatteras is up for auction.
The Virginian-Pilot of Norfolk reported the Diamond Shoals Light Tower is being auctioned as surplus property. It’s 13 miles off Cape Hatteras and is called a “Texas tower” because it resembles an oil platform more than a lighthouse.
There are some drawbacks. The General Services Administration says potential buyers will not be able to inspect the tower. That’s because a 2010 inspection showed the deck could be unsafe for helicopter landings and the stairs from the waterline are damaged.
Still, the agency is accepting sealed bids until Aug. 31. Minimum bid is $15,000.
The platform includes a living area of 5,000 square feet. That includes five bedrooms, a kitchen, an office and storage space.
