GOLDSBORO (AP) — A Wayne County man has become the first person in North Carolina to die from West Nile virus this year.
The News-Argus of Goldsboro reported that Wayne County Health Director Davin Madden on Monday announced the cause of death. The man’s name has not been released.
Madden says his staff has notified all medical providers in the area about the case.
West Nile virus is typically transmitted by mosquitoes.
North Carolina Health and Human Services Secretary Al Delia said it’s the first West Nile virus-related death in the state in recent years.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports more than 390 cases of West Nile virus disease nationwide this year, the highest number since 2004. At least eight people have died.
“This is a tragic reminder of the importance of prevention,” said Delia. Most cases of the virus happen in August and September, he said.
Health officials recommend eliminating standing water in places like flower pots, discarded containers, gutters and kiddie pools.
People also should keep window screens and panes in good condition. They also recommend people wear long sleeves, pants and socks.
Some of the symptoms of West Nile virus include fever, headache and a stiff neck.
