Area sports briefs: Britt wins again

Alex Britt (Salisbury) had another strong outing for the Dubois County Bombers in the Prospect League on Tuesday.
Britt pitched eight innings and led the Bombers to a 10-2 win against the Springfield Sliders.
Britt (5-1) allowed four hits and struck out five.
Minor leaguesThe Kannapolis Intimidators won 6-1 at Hickory on Tuesday.
Joey DeMichele knocked in four runs for the Intimidators.
DeMichele, a third-round pick last month, and Mark Haddow homered.
Chris Devenski pitched seven strong innings for his sixth win.
Jerry Sands (Catawba) hit a three-run homer for Albuquerque on Tuesday. It was Sands’ 19th homer of the season.
Local golf
Nick Lyerly took second place with a 75 in Tuesday’s National Junior Golf Association tournament played at Pine Brook Country Club in Winston-Salem.
Lyerly finished one shot back of the leader.
Local golfers competed in the Tarheel Youth Golf Association junior tournament at the The Club at Irish Creek on Monday.
In the 12-13 age group, Michael Childress shot 83 for third place. Chris Queen shot 91 for eighth.
In the 16-18 age group, James Lohr placed second with a 73. Alex Austin tied for fourth at 75. Evan Neas shot 80, and Josh Pope shot 88.
Childress will play in the U.S. Kids tournament in Pinehurst this weekend. The event will include 1,300 players from all over the world.
The Corbin Hills ladies held their weekly golf event on Tuesday.
Low gross was won by Phyllis Durland. She was followed by Kristi Laton, Beth Calhoun, and Toni Iossi.
Low net was won by Sheryl Johnson. She was followed by Joan Havill, Karla Swanson and Louise Collins.
Low putts was won by Ruth Bowles.
Eighty GARS members played the third round of their annual ABCD Tournament at Warrior.
‘A’ Flight winner was Clayton Steele with a net of 60.04.
‘B’ Flight winner was Mickey Ousley with a net of 60.88.
Low ‘C’ Flight winner was Clarence Derrick with a net of 58.73.
Low ‘D’ Flight winner was Lloyd Clodfelter with a net of 65.12.
Boyce Caudle shot 8 under his age, and Steele shot 7 under his age.
n In the Carolinas PGA Senior Championships at Pine Island Country Club in Charlotte, Kannapolis’ Rick Lewallen shot a first-round 68 and is tied for second, one shot back of the leader.
Youth track
Parker Westbrook and Andrew Burgess of the Hurley YMCA Warriors competed in the heat in the 1500 meters on Monday in the Junior National Olympics in Houston.
Burgess ran 4:57 to place 12th in his age group.
Westbrook ran 6:38 and was 49th.
Westbrook and Burgess will compete in the 800 today.
College football
Appalachian State dismissed senior linebacker John Rizor from the team and announced sophomore QB Kalik Barnes won’t be permitted to play this season, although he is still on the team and will still practice.
The disciplinary measures were due to violations of team rules.
