SALISBURY — An 18-year-old man believed to be involved in a train robbery in April surrendered to officers at the Salisbury Police Department Sunday afternoon.
According to a police report, Kenyad Kelly, of South Merritt Avenue, turned himself in about 4 p.m. He was charged with felony accessory after the fact, two counts of misdemeanor failure to appear and felony manufacturing or possessing a weapon of mass destruction.
The weapon, a sawed-off shotgun, is believed to be one that was used to rob two Norfolk Southern train operators as they waited for a shift change in the engine compartment in the 300 block of Council Street on April 30 about 11 p.m.
Police arrested the two accused of boarding the train, Willie Johnson Jr. and Altise Shaheed Bridges, on June 18.
They later obtained warrants for Kelly after investigators said he took possession of the shotgun following the robbery.
The 18-year-old was in jail Monday under a $12,000 bond.
According to the Department of Corrections’ online offender database, Kelly is on probation after he was convicted of misdemeanor assault June 7.
On March 26, he was convicted of injury to real property and two counts of resisting, obstructing or delaying an officer. He was also given probation in that case.
Kelly is scheduled to have a first appearance in court Tuesday.
Bridges and Johnson Jr. are scheduled to be in court on train robbery charges Aug. 6.
