SPENCER — Shutterbugs became fireflies Tuesday night, buzzing and flashing around the N.C. Transportation Museum for a rare opportunity to photograph after dark an exhibit showcasing Norfolk Southern Corp.’s history.
“Norfolk Southern Heritage Locomotives: A Family Portrait,” marks the 30th anniversary of the company created by the merger of the Southern and Norfolk & Western railways, which themselves were preceded by hundreds of railroads dating to the 1800s.
To celebrate, the company is displaying 20 locomotives painted in the schemes of some of those railroads. Some of the locomotives have been traveling the country for months, while others have recently been pulled out of regular service and repainted.
This week is the only time all 20 will be collected in one place, organizers say.
The exhibit continues today with gates opening at 8 a.m. and events taking place throughout the day, including another nighttime photo shoot at 9 p.m. Tickets are $30 for adults and $20 for children. Nighttime photo shoot passes are an additional $20 per person.
