This photograph appeared in the Salisbury Evening Post March 1, 1942, under the heading, “Here is Salisbury’s Youngest Defense Group.” The pre-schoolers on the stairs had gathered the previous Thursday at the home of Mary Hanford on South Fulton Street, where itinerant Girl Scout Director Fannie Funderburke (pictured behind the children) offered the children ideas on how they could help on the homefront during World War II. “They learned, among other things, that they could collect used postage stamps and unused defense stamps, tinfoil, waste paper and razor blades,” the story said. “But the best idea, Miss Funderburke told them, was to help mother so she could have more time for civilian defense activities.” You likely are still familiar with some of the people on the staircase. Starting at the top and going down, they are Betty Dan Nicholas (now Mrs. John Robert Spencer), Mary Elizabeth “Liddy” Hanford (now Elizabeth Hanford Dole, former U.S. senator), Meetta Carlton (now Mrs. E.E. “Mack” Lampert Jr.), Peggy Jo Cress (now Mrs. Ralph Brice of Charlotte), Tommy Carlton (Dr. Thomas Kern Carlton), Betty Wright Snyder (Mrs. Dale Emerson of Sacramento, Calif.) and Wyndham Robertson, who now lives in Chapel Hill. The Rowan Museum will host an exhibit on the life of Elizabeth Hanford Dole, opening Sunday with a 1 p.m. reception. Dole will be here for the reception and opening day.
