SALISBURY — Insuring that historic sites are protected and their stories are told takes hundreds of hours as owners, volunteers and contractors restore the historic buildings that define the character of Rowan County.
Others focus their attention on research of the past and educating people about the importance of local history.
Together, their work protects and promotes the historic character that brings visitors to Salisbury and strengthens the county’s tax base.
Historic Salisbury Foundation will honor the best historic preservation success stories at its 2012 Preservation Awards May 31 at the Salisbury Station. A reception will begin at 6:30 p.m. with awards at 7:15. For a $20 reservation, go to www.historicsalisbury.org or call 704-636-0103 by Thursday.
Honorees this year will be:
• Commercial revitalization through historic preservation
N.C. Yadkin House LLC for exterior restoration of the Yadkin Hotel Building, 201 N. Lee St.
Rowan County for exterior rehabilitation of the 1854 Rowan County Courthouse Building, 202 N. Main St.
Steinman-Dunn Properties for rehabilitation of the Yancy-Hardiman-Steinman Building, 131 E. Innes St.
• Private preservation and neighborhood revitalization
Mona and Lee Wallace for restoration of the Hambley-Wallace House, 508 S. Fulton St.
Moore’s Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church for rehabilitation of the church roof and dome, 500 Partee St.
St. John’s Lutheran Church for restoration of the tubular bells in the church tower, 200 W. Innes St.
Belinda and Garth Birdsey for numerous renovations and advocacy in the Park Avenue Neighborhood
• Long-time preservation leader
Charles Peacock for his years of research, education and advocacy
• Preservation education and publication
Genealogical Society of Rowan County, Leslie Black, editor, for “The Journal of the Genealogical Society of Rowan County”
