Area sports briefs: Indians all-tourney

Besides MVP second baseman Julio Zubillaga (Carson), Catawba’s baseball team placed catcher Greg Lawson, third baseman Cameron Beard, right fielder Ryan Bostian (South Rowan) and pitchers John J. Tuttle (A.L. Brown) and Ross Whitley on the Southeast Regional all-tournament team.
American Legion
Joe Hubbard’s return to the helm of the Kannapolis American Legion team was successful on Sunday.
Kannapolis beat Concord 8-3 in a game that won’t count in the Southern Division of Area III standings.
Corey Seager and Travis Watkins homered for Post 115.
Seager knocked in three runs. Seager, Will Miller and Jordan Goodman had two hits each.
Kannapolis used Ryan Keziah, Jesse Klepper and D.J. Smith on the mound.
Brandon Porter drove in two runs for Concord.
Intimidators baseball
Lexington pitcher Luis Cruz shut down Kannapolis and the Legends beat the Intimidators 7-1 on Sunday at CMC-NorthEast Stadium.
Kannapolis turned double plays in the fourth and fifth innings to keep the Legends off the scoreboard.
Ross Wilson reached base safely four times in the game, with a double, two walks and a hit-by-pitch to lead the Kannapolis offense.
The Intimidators embark on an eight-game road trip beginning with consecutive doubleheaders at the Hickory Crawdads, starting today at 4 p.m.
Local golf
The McCanless Couples played with a two-man Captain’s Choice format on Sunday.
The winners were Paul Hill Jr. and Treva Honeycutt. Sharon Miller and Juan Garcia finished second.
Longest putt on No. 7 was won by Cliff Full. Closest to the pin on No. 3 was won by Ricky Honeycutt.
Many local golfers competed recently in the second annual golf tournament at the Crescent Golf course in support of Rowan Helping Ministries
Sixty four golfers and 23 sponsors raised over $4,000.
“We wanted to help our local Rowan residents who are in crisis in these tough economic times” committee member Wayne Kluttz said. “The golf tournament committee are members of Rowan Helping Ministries West Task Force.The task force meets every other month and works together throughout the year fundraising and keeping the shelves stock with food in the Rowan Helping Ministries West satellite location in Mount Ulla. Ted Luther a golf committee member stated that “he wanted to do a fundraiser to help Rowan Helping Ministries and the people they serve.”

Youth baseball
The Rowan Rangers 13U baseball team won the South Mountain Bash Nations Baseball Tournament in Hickory over the weekend.
The Rangers went 4-0 by defeating the Statesville Mudcats 9-7, the Lake Hickory Rage 10-2, the Hickory Heat 13-0 and the St.Stephens Indians 13-5.
Team members are Jonathan Luther, Brandon Walton, Brett Graham, Trevor Atwood, Tyler Wheeler, Levi Dixon, Geoffrey Lillywhite, John Yang, Alex Yang, Cody LaRue, Josh Roberts and Harrison Smith.
The Rangers are coached by Scott Graham, Alan Walton and David Dixon.
