RALEIGH — The N.C. Department of Transportation will close a short section of Interstate 85 to traffic in both directions in Davidson County beginning at 10 p.m. Sunday and continuing through 6 a.m. Monday for demolition of the old Belmont Road bridge.
The lanes near Exit 86 at Belmont Road will be closed again from 10 p.m. Monday until 6 a.m. Tuesday and, if necessary, from 10 p.m. Tuesday until 10 a.m. Wednesday, as demolition and removal work continues.
Motorists will be directed to leave the interstate at Exit 86 and then re-enter I-85 after crossing the new four-lane Belmont Road Bridge. Law enforcement officers will be present to assist traffic flow each night.
Throughout construction, traffic flow can be monitored on the project website at http://www.i-85yadkinriver2.com/camera.html.
The work is part of the northern segment of the Department of Transportation’s I-85 Corridor Improvement Project. The bridge replacement was designed to provide a safer way to cross over I-85 and to accommodate interstate widening along the corridor.
