CHARLOTTE (AP) — The University of North Carolina Charlotte says bank account numbers and Social Security numbers of more than 350,000 students and faculty were accidentally exposed in a computer security breach.
The school on Wednesday released results of a study after the breach was discovered by staff members in February.
The school says part of the problem was improper access settings that made the electronic data accessible on the Internet.
UNC Charlotte says the information from the school’s general system was exposed for about three months. Information from the engineering college was exposed for more than 10 years.
School officials don’t think the information was accessed improperly or used for identity theft. .
State and federal officials continue to investigate how the breach occurred.
