GREENSBORO (AP) — The wife of an ex-aide who falsely claimed paternity of John Edwards’ baby is expected to retake the witness stand when the two-time presidential candidate’s trial resumes in North Carolina.
Cheri Young began her testimony Friday by recounting her husband’s first years as an aide to the former U.S. senator and Democratic vice-presidential nominee. She said Andrew Young was mesmerized the first time he saw Edwards speak in 1998 and told her he would do whatever it took to work for him.
The Youngs are now crucial to making the government’s case that Edwards masterminded a scheme to use about $1 million from wealthy donors to hide his pregnant mistress as he sought the White House in 2008. Andrew Young testified last week he kept most of the money for himself.
